Arzano's patronal feast blending faith, tradition, and sacred drama
The Santa Giustina Festival is the most defining patronal celebration of Arzano, a town in the Metropolitan City of Naples, situated in the densely populated area north of the regional capital. Every year, during the first half of July, the entire community gathers around the figure of the martyr for a week of religious rites, cultural events, and popular festivities.
The cult of Saint Justina in Arzano has its roots in 1858, when the relics of the 3rd-century Christian martyr were brought to the city by the Vincentian Fathers. Since then, the devotion has spread deeply among the people of Arzano, so much so that Saint Justina has become a co-patron of the city alongside Saint Agrippinus. The festival thus preserves a tradition of over 150 years, passed down from generation to generation.
The spiritual heart of the event is the «Tragedia di Santa Giustina», a sacred play that depicts the life and martyrdom of the saint, featuring local actors, extras, and singers. Alongside the theatrical performance, the calendar weaves together processions, concerts, exhibitions, and the final solemn mass, striking a balance between religious contemplation and collective participation.
The festival is organized by the Pro Loco ArzaNostra in collaboration with the parishes of Saint Agrippinus and Christ the Redeemer, with the support of the Municipality of Arzano, local schools, and associations. More than just an event, it represents an opportunity for the citizenry to reconnect with their roots, strengthen the sense of community, and rediscover the town's identity.
Included in the rich calendar of patronal festivals in Campania, the Santa Giustina Festival attracts worshippers and visitors from neighboring towns in the area north of Naples. The streets of the center and the churchyard of Saint Agrippinus become the natural stage for a tradition that unites the sacred and the profane, historical memory, and the daily life of the city.
From July 6th to 13th, 2026, Arzano, in the province of Naples, renewed its oldest patronal festival. The opening on July 6th combined «Musica Live» concerts on the churchyard of Saint Agrippinus with the inauguration of an art and photography exhibition, open throughout the week. The central moment, as per tradition, was the sacred performance of the «Tragedia di Santa Giustina», staged on July 9th and 10th in the liturgical hall of the Parish of Saint Agrippinus. The celebrations closed on Sunday, July 13th, with the solemn mass dedicated to the martyr.
Arzano is located in the first belt north of Naples. By car, it can be reached via the Asse Mediano and the Naples Tangenziale, taking the exits towards Arzano-Casoria. By train, the reference stations are those of the metropolitan network and suburban lines of the Neapolitan area, with bus connections to the city center.
The hub of the celebrations is the Church of Saint Agrippinus in Piazza Raffaele Cimmino, with events spread across the churchyard, the Villa Comunale, and the main streets of Arzano's center.
