An ancient patronal fair blending devotion, tradition, and community in the heart of the Cilento region
The Santa Domenica Fair is one of the most historic and deeply felt events for the community of Orria, a small village of fewer than nine hundred inhabitants perched at an altitude of about 540 meters in the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, in the province of Salerno, Campania. The Municipality of Orria describes it with a motto that perfectly captures its spirit: «an ancient patronal fair between devotion, tradition, and community». It is a day where religious and civil life intertwine, just as they did in the fairs that once marked the agricultural calendar of the Cilento lands.
The highlight of the event is the solemn mass celebrated in honor of Santa Domenica, followed by a procession through the village streets. The statue of the Saint is carried on the shoulders of the faithful, accompanied by hymns, prayers, and the active participation of the community: a simple yet deeply moving ritual that also involves former residents who return from abroad or from Northern Italy for the occasion. During these hours, the village unites around a devotion passed down through generations, which, more than anything else, defines the town's identity.
Alongside the religious observances, the fair itself unfolds, a direct descendant of the markets that once served as the only trading opportunity for inland communities. Along the streets of the center, stalls from local producers, artisans, and associations line up, offering:
It is the perfect opportunity to discover the material culture, craftsmanship, and flavors of this part of Campania, in a setting far removed from the more touristy festivals of the coast.
Visitors arriving for the fair will find a town that is a destination in its own right. The municipal territory includes the hamlets of Piano Vetrale—known as the «village of murals» for the paintings that animate its walls and linked to the painter Paolo De Matteis—and Casino Lebano. The surrounding landscape is a tapestry of olive groves, forests, and hills sloping down toward the Cilento sea, in an area recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site and considered one of the cradles of the Mediterranean diet. The local festival calendar is rich: in addition to the patron saint San Felice, celebrated in winter and August, the summer season features events like «Il Pennello d'Oro» in Piano Vetrale and the exhibition market dedicated to the white fig of Cilento.
The Municipality of Orria has scheduled the 2026 Santa Domenica Fair for July 6 and 7, with continuous hours from 8:30 AM to 11:30 PM and free admission. In previous seasons, the event has also been noted at the beginning of August: those planning a trip should check the dates on the official municipal channels before setting off, as the calendar may vary from year to year.
The Santa Domenica Fair is not a massive event for thousands of spectators: it is an authentic, free, family-friendly village festival where religious ritual, commerce, and conviviality form a single experience. For those staying in Cilento during the summer, it represents a concrete way to connect with the real life of inland villages, just a few kilometers from the beaches but in an entirely different atmosphere.
The Municipality of Orria included the 2026 Santa Domenica Fair in its event calendar for July 6 and 7, with hours from 8:30 AM to 11:30 PM on both days and free admission. The logistical reference point is the municipal office at Via Stella 7, while the event is spread throughout the town center.
The structure of the festival remains traditional: the religious celebration in honor of Santa Domenica with the procession of the statue, accompanied by the fair with stalls from local producers, artisans, and associations, offering typical Cilento products, handcrafted goods, and food stalls. No tickets, no reservations: participation is free and open to everyone, including families.

The streets of the historic center are narrow and steep: it is best to leave your car in the parking lots at the entrance to the village and continue on foot, wearing comfortable shoes. For the procession, respectful attire is appropriate. On summer days, it is useful to bring water and a hat, while in the evening, the temperature in the hills can drop significantly.
