Two days of devotion, music, and Irpinian flavors in the Santa Croce district
Every year, at the beginning of May, the Santa Croce district of Venticano becomes the center of local life. The Santa Croce Festival is one of those traditions in Irpinia that goes beyond religious ritual: families, returning emigrants, committees, and associations gather around the chapel for two full days of prayer, music, and food. It is a deeply felt event, passed down through generations, which symbolically marks the start of the warm season in the municipality of Venticano, in the province of Avellino.
The festival begins not with music, but with reflection. In the days leading up to the event, a preparation triduum takes place: each evening, the community gathers for the Holy Rosary and Holy Mass with invocations to the Holy Cross. It is the most intimate moment, where the village reconnects with the original meaning of the feast before the streets fill with life.
The final day is entirely marked by liturgy: a solemn celebration in the morning, Holy Mass in the late morning, and a liturgical celebration in the late afternoon, followed by the most anticipated moment.
After the evening service, the Cross is carried in procession through the streets of the district, accompanied by a marching band playing traditional tunes. The pageant winds through the village past decorated balconies and families standing at their doorways: this is the true heart of the event. Upon return, the sky over Santa Croce is lit up by a fireworks display, an essential highlight of Campanian patronal feasts.
Once the religious portion concludes, the festival shifts gears. The food and wine stalls offer a journey through local dishes prepared by committee volunteers: homemade fusilli, caciocavallo impiccato (hanging cheese) melted over embers, sausage or cotechino sandwiches, pizza cotta nel ruoto (pan-baked pizza), and traditional desserts. These are paired with Irpinian wines—starting with Aglianico, the iconic grape of these hills—and craft beer.
The Santa Croce stage hosts folk bands, tribute acts, and local artists every year, with concerts lasting late into the night. There is also plenty for children: in the late afternoon of the first day, a street circus and entertainment show is scheduled, ensuring the festival remains an event for all ages. The community dinner on the eve of the festival, served outdoors, is the most convivial moment, where the village literally sits at the same table.
The event is promoted by the Santa Croce Festival Committee together with Omast Eventi, which handles the artistic direction, with the support of the Municipal Administration, the Pro Loco of Venticano, and local associations, including the Youth Forum. It is a grassroots organizational model common in the villages of inland Campania, where the success of the festival depends on the volunteer work of dozens of people.
Venticano is a small town in the province of Avellino, in Campania, nestled on the hills of the Calore Valley along the route connecting Irpinia to Sannio. The area is a land of vineyards and local produce, a short distance from the villages of Taurasi and the areas producing Greco di Tufo and Fiano di Avellino. Visitors arriving for the Santa Croce Festival can also enjoy a food and wine weekend among wineries, nougat, and hilly landscapes.
From April 30th to May 2nd, 2026, the community of Venticano experienced the preparation triduum, with the Holy Rosary at 6:30 PM and Holy Mass with invocations at 7:00 PM. The festival officially opened on Saturday, May 2nd with children's entertainment in the late afternoon and the community dinner in the evening, accompanied by the folk music of Contacunti and artist Silvino Fabiano.
Sunday, May 3rd was the solemn day: morning celebration, Holy Mass at 11:30 AM, and a liturgical celebration at 6:30 PM, followed by the procession through the district streets with the G. Verdi Cultural and Musical Association of Montesarchio. In the evening, the fireworks display, the second edition of the food and wine evening, and the tribute concert to Max Pezzali and 883 took place.
The organization was handled by the Santa Croce Festival Committee, chaired by Antonio Capone, with artistic direction by Omast Eventi and the support of the Municipality of Venticano, the Pro Loco, the Youth Forum, and local associations.
By car: take the Castel del Lago or Grottaminarda exit on the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, then follow the SS90 road towards Venticano; the Santa Croce district can be reached from the town center in a few minutes. Approximately 25 km from Avellino and 30 km from Benevento.
Nearest train station: Benevento or Avellino, with connections by local bus or car. During the festival, it is recommended to arrive early for parking, which is available along the streets of the district.
Free admission to celebrations, the procession, fireworks, and concerts. Food and wine tastings at the stalls are paid, with affordable prices per dish or via tickets.
Information available from Omast Eventi ([email protected], tel. +39 340 2829757) and the Pro Loco of Venticano. May evenings in the hills can be cool: it is best to bring a light jacket. Comfortable shoes are recommended for following the procession.
