About Santa Claus House

In Piaggine, a village in the upper Cilento region at the foot of Monte Cervati, the Santa Claus House transforms the Pro Loco Cervati headquarters into an enchanted home for children and families. Traditional storytelling, folk music, and a warm welcome mark an afternoon that kicks off the town's Christmas festivities. The event is part of the 'Terre ritrovate — i viaggi delle radici nella Valle del Calore' program, supported by the Campania Region to promote the identity of small villages in the province of Salerno.

Santa Claus House in Piaggine

Every December, the Municipality of Piaggine, in the province of Salerno, hosts a highly anticipated event for children: the Santa Claus House, set up by the Pro Loco Cervati at their headquarters on Corso Sayalonga. For a few hours, the municipal portico becomes a decorated home where little ones can meet Santa Claus, listen to stories, and experience the anticipation of Christmas with the enthusiasm and lightness typical of this time of year.

This is not a large, ticketed village, but a local community event: born from the collaboration between the Pro Loco and the municipal administration, it focuses on hospitality and community spirit—values that, in a mountain village in upper Cilento, count for more than any elaborate set design. As Mayor Renato Pizzolante noted, the goal is to fully experience the village's Christmas atmosphere through sharing.

Traditional tales and folk music

The heart of the initiative lies in traditional storytelling and music. Christmas tales handed down in the Calore Valley, nursery rhymes, and folk songs accompany the visit to Santa Claus's home: a simple, intentionally artisanal formula designed for children and families, which recaptures how Christmas was experienced in Cilento villages before the arrival of large-scale commercial displays.

  • Santa Claus House setup at the Pro Loco Cervati headquarters
  • Traditional local storytelling and narration
  • Folk music and songs from Cilento
  • A warm welcome dedicated to children and families

A piece of the 'Terre ritrovate' project

The event is part of 'Terre ritrovate — i viaggi delle radici nella Valle del Calore', a cultural program uniting six municipalities: Castel San Lorenzo (lead partner), Piaggine, Laurino, Sacco, Roscigno, and Valle dell'Angelo. The project is funded by the Campania Region as part of the cohesion agreement (CIPESS resolution no. 70/2024) and is dedicated to 'roots tourism': bringing those who left back to the villages and introducing new visitors to the traditions, music, festivals, and typical products of this inland part of Cilento.

In the 'Terre ritrovate' Christmas calendar, the Piaggine Santa Claus House joins other events in neighboring towns: the living nativity scene in Roscigno Vecchia, the mountain flavors of Valle dell'Angelo, performances in Laurino, the markets in Sacco, and live music in Castel San Lorenzo. Those visiting the area in December can thus build a multi-day itinerary across villages located just a few kilometers apart.

Piaggine, a village at the foot of Monte Cervati

Piaggine sits at an altitude of about 630 meters in the heart of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, at the foot of Monte Cervati (1,899 meters), the highest peak in Campania. It is a town of a few hundred inhabitants, with a historic center clustered around Piazza Vittorio Veneto and a strong hiking tradition, linked to the trails leading up to the Cervati and the gorges carved by the Calore River.

This secluded position gives the event its character: in winter, the Cilento mountains are quiet, and opportunities for gathering become precious. The Santa Claus House is one such occasion, and it is no coincidence that it is also designed for families returning to the village for the holidays.

Christmas in Piaggine

Over the years, the Pro Loco Cervati and the Municipality have built a true Christmas calendar, of which the Santa Claus House is now the most recognizable event. Past holiday programs have included the arrival of Santa Claus on horseback through the town streets, the lighting of bonfires in various districts on Christmas Eve with tastings of local products—roasted sausage and bruschetta with Piaggine extra virgin olive oil—games and inflatables for children in Piazza Vittorio Veneto, and New Year's Eve music.

2026 Edition

As of the update of this entry, the program for the 2026 edition has not yet been published: the event is usually held in December, but dates and times have not been confirmed. To avoid missing the announcement, it is advisable to follow the Pro Loco Piaggine social media channels and the communications from the Municipality of Piaggine.

Santa Claus House — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Santa Claus House in Piaggine has not yet been announced. The event usually takes place in December at the Pro Loco Cervati headquarters on Corso Sayalonga, featuring traditional stories and music for children and families. At the moment, no official dates or program have been published: the date indicated in this entry is purely indicative and will be updated as soon as confirmations arrive from the organizers.

For 2026, the Pro Loco Cervati and the Municipality of Piaggine have not yet released the Christmas holiday calendar. The Santa Claus House is traditionally held in the days leading up to Christmas at the association's headquarters on Corso Sayalonga, in the center of the Cilento village at the foot of Monte Cervati.

It remains to be seen whether the event will again be included in the 'Terre ritrovate — i viaggi delle radici nella Valle del Calore' program, the initiative funded by the Campania Region that in 2025 brought together Piaggine, Castel San Lorenzo, Laurino, Sacco, Roscigno, and Valle dell'Angelo under a common banner.

We recommend following the 'Pro Loco Piaggine' Facebook page and the channels of the Municipality of Piaggine (province of Salerno) to learn about dates, times, and participation details as soon as they are announced.
