The patron saint of Boscotrecase celebrated on July 26th at the foot of Mount Vesuvius
The Sant'Anna Patronal Feast is the most anticipated event of the year in Boscotrecase, a small town in the province of Naples nestled on the southern slopes of Mount Vesuvius, in Campania. Saint Anne, mother of the Virgin Mary, has been the town's protector for centuries and is invoked as a symbol of motherhood, fertility, and family protection. Her cult, deeply rooted throughout the Vesuvian area, finds one of its most intense expressions here: on July 26th, town life comes to a standstill, centering entirely around the Saint.
What makes the Boscotrecase feast unique is its direct link to the great Vesuvius eruption of April 1906. As the lava flow advanced toward the town, the population requested that the statue of Saint Anne be carried in procession to meet the lava; once permission was granted, the faithful accompanied the Saint to the very edge of the flow. The halting of the lava was attributed to her intercession, and the statue was returned to town in triumph. However, the lava surrounded the parish church and invaded its crypt, damaging the entrance portal and vestibule. Since then, the July 26th commemoration is not just a patronal feast: it is the collective memory of a community that rebuilt itself after the catastrophe.
Everything revolves around the Church of Sant'Anna, located in Piazza Sant'Anna. Its origins date back to a small oratory existing as early as 1628; in 1668, the town council obtained authorization from the Archbishop of Naples, Cardinal Innico Caracciolo, to build new churches for a growing population. The building took its current form around 1730, with side chapels added in 1865 thanks to parishioner donations. After the damage of 1906, reconstruction followed, along with a new pipe organ built in Cremona in 1921 and a facade renovation in 1930. The late-Baroque, single-nave church is uniquely oriented north, toward Vesuvius; the main altar, made of inlaid polychrome marble, houses a 17th-century painting dedicated to Saint Anne.
The day alternates between liturgical moments and secular festivities, following a well-established tradition:
The secular calendar can vary from year to year and sometimes extends beyond the Saint's day, with musical evenings and events organized by the Municipality and festival committees.
Visitors arriving in Boscotrecase for the feast will discover the cuisine of the Vesuvian slopes: pomodorino del piennolo (cherry tomatoes), Vesuvian apricots, taralli, fried pizza, local street food, and traditional Neapolitan sweets. The stalls set up along the central streets and in the square tell the story of an agricultural territory that has always coexisted with the volcano, amidst vineyards and gardens planted on volcanic soil.
The Sant'Anna Feast is not a manufactured tourist event: it is an authentic, free, and open-to-all village festival where the religious dimension remains central, and everything else grows around it. For a visitor, it is a chance to see firsthand how popular devotion is lived in the Vesuvian area, just a few kilometers from Pompeii, Torre Annunziata, and the Vesuvius National Park. We recommend arriving in the late afternoon to follow the procession and staying in the square until the fireworks.
The commemoration of Saint Anne, patron saint of Boscotrecase, fell on Sunday, July 26th, 2026, and was celebrated according to tradition in the Vesuvian town in the province of Naples, Campania.
The day was also an opportunity for an announcement awaited by the community: Mayor Pietro Carotenuto presented the restyling project for Piazza Sant'Anna, worth approximately one million euros. The intervention includes a new children's play area, traffic reorganization, twenty-one new parking spaces, an illuminated fountain that can also be used as seating, smart benches, free Wi-Fi, and full accessibility of the public space. "The project exists, the funds are there: now we proceed to award the contracts," declared the mayor on the day of the Patron Saint.
The detailed program of the 2026 secular festivities was not released online in full: updates are published year by year by the Sant'Anna parish and the Municipality of Boscotrecase.
