Masks, parades, and the Senzabriglie tradition in the heart of the Valtiberina
Every winter, the historic center of Sansepolcro, located in the Tuscan Valtiberina in the province of Arezzo, transforms into a grand open-air stage for Carnival. The streets of the town, particularly Piazza Torre di Berta, welcome masks, confetti, music, and costumed groups for a day designed to bring together young and old in an atmosphere of shared joy.
The beating heart of the festival is Senzabriglie, the iconic mask of the Sansepolcro Carnival. Deeply connected to the city's popular memory, this traditional figure embodies the ironic and joyful spirit of the town, its traditions, and its history. Senzabriglie also represents Sansepolcro in its friendship with neighboring Anghiari, where the town's own historical mask also makes an appearance.
The Sansepolcro Carnival thrives on its masked group parades, which bring the historic center to life with themes and choreography chosen by the participants. Registered groups have the opportunity to perform on stage in an atmosphere of camaraderie and fun. The organizers aim to celebrate everyone's creativity: there is no final ranking, but rather a space to showcase their work and experience Carnival as a collective, non-competitive event. Throughout the day, recognition is still given to the most original masks.
For several years, the Sansepolcro Carnival has been linked to the Anghiari Carnival through a friendship pact that unites the two Valtiberina municipalities. Their respective historical masks become stars in both events, which are organized on two consecutive Sundays: an opportunity for visitors to experience two different yet complementary festivals in the same territory, just a few kilometers apart.
More than just a costume party, the Sansepolcro Carnival is an event of folk tradition that strengthens the sense of community in the town, the birthplace of Piero della Francesca and a jewel of eastern Tuscany. The backdrop of the historic center, with its squares and palaces, sets the stage for a day of color, cheer, and participation, where families and visitors gather to share the joyful spirit of Carnival.
The 2026 Sansepolcro Carnival was held on Sunday, February 15 in the city's historic center, with Piazza Torre di Berta as the heart of the festivities. Registered masked groups, with freely chosen themes, brought the streets of the town to life and performed on stage in an atmosphere of sharing and fun.
For 2026, the organization once again confirmed the non-competitive format: no ranking between groups, but recognition for the most original masks to showcase everyone's creativity. The iconic mask Senzabriglie represented the historical identity of the local Carnival.
The edition renewed the Valtiberina pact with Anghiari, which held its festivities on Sunday, February 8, confirming two consecutive Sundays of Carnival between the two municipalities in the province of Arezzo.
The Sansepolcro Carnival generally takes place on a Sunday during the Carnival season, between February and early March. In 2026, the event is scheduled for Sunday, February 15.
