About San Vincenzo Feast in Mandre

Every year at the end of summer, the Mandre district of Santa Maria a Vico gathers to honor its patron saint, Saint Vincent Ferrer, with three days blending religious devotion and local festivities. Featuring rosaries, solemn masses, a neighborhood procession, the 'Mandriadi' children's games, live music in the square, and a grand fireworks finale, this patronal feast is the heart and soul of this small village in the province of Caserta, in the heart of inland Campania.

The patronal feast of the Mandre district

In Mandre, a small district of the municipality of Santa Maria a Vico in the province of Caserta, the end of summer has always been marked by the patronal feast of Saint Vincent Ferrer. For three days, the neighborhood surrounding the church on Via Mandre transforms: the streets light up, the churchyard becomes the hub of community life, and families who have moved away return home to reconnect. It is not a massive regional event, and that is precisely its charm: it remains a local district festival that has preserved its human scale.

Saint Vincent Ferrer, the saint of a community

The parish of Saint Vincent Ferrer in Mandre belongs to the Diocese of Acerra and serves a community of about seven hundred faithful. It is distinct from the municipality's main parish, the minor basilica of Maria SS. Assunta—elevated to that dignity by Pius XII in 1957—which celebrates its own feast around mid-August. Mandre has its own saint, its own church, and its own calendar. The bond with Saint Vincent is so strong that in 2016, when the feast date was moved to September, the entire neighborhood took to the streets to demand its traditional late-August slot. This episode speaks volumes about how much this event defines the local identity.

The religious program

The core of the festival is strictly liturgical, spanning three consecutive days: the vigil, the solemnity, and the day of thanksgiving. Recurring events include:

  • Holy Rosary in the late afternoon, followed by the Eucharistic Celebration
  • Solemn Mass on the patron saint's feast day
  • Procession of Saint Vincent through the district streets, with the statue carried on shoulders amidst the faithful
  • Hymn of Thanksgiving to close the triduum

The Mandriadi, the children's festival

Alongside the religious observances, a recreational program known as the Mandriadi has grown over the years: a series of games and activities designed for children that bring the district square to life and involve entire families. It is the moment when the festival takes on a lighter tone, becoming an opportunity for intergenerational socializing, with children taking center stage in the public space.

Music in the square and fireworks

The evenings are dedicated to live music, with a lineup that favors traditional Neapolitan and Campanian melodic styles alongside dance groups. In 2025, the stage featured the band Impossible, Luca Formisani, and Federico di Napoli, while the closing night showcased Giusy Attanasio. As in almost all patronal feasts in the province of Caserta, the grand finale is the fireworks display, which lights up the sky over Mandre.

The collection of gifts

Among the rituals marking Sunday is the collection of gifts: in the morning, the festival committee walks through the streets of the district, collecting offerings in kind from families, which are then auctioned off in the evening before the gathered community. This is a widespread custom in Campanian patronal feasts, a ritual of collective participation where the neighborhood reaffirms its identity and self-funds its celebrations.

Santa Maria a Vico, between Caserta, Benevento, and Naples

The municipality of Santa Maria a Vico has about 14,400 inhabitants and stretches entirely along the ancient Appian Way (now Strada Statale 7), acting as a crossroads between the provinces of Caserta, Benevento, and Naples. Founded by the Romans during the Second Samnite War under the name Vicus Novanensis, the town retains an agricultural fabric that long defined its economy. Mandre is located less than a kilometer from the town center—close enough to be part of it, yet autonomous enough to have its own festival.

When to go

The festival traditionally takes place between the end of August and the beginning of September: in 2025, it was held from August 30th to September 1st. Dates and the detailed program are released by the parish and the festival committee in the weeks immediately preceding the event, via posters displayed throughout Santa Maria a Vico and community word-of-mouth.

San Vincenzo Feast in Mandre — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Saint Vincent Ferrer patronal feast in Mandre has not yet been officially announced. The community of the Santa Maria a Vico district is preparing for the usual end-of-summer event, which in 2025 took place from August 30th to September 1st with a liturgical triduum, procession, Mandriadi for children, concerts in the square, and fireworks. Dates and the program will be announced by the parish and the festival committee in the preceding weeks.

2026 Edition: dates not yet announced

However, the event is firmly rooted in the neighborhood's calendar and is repeated every year between the end of August and the beginning of September.

What to expect

Based on recent editions, the festival is spread over three days: Holy Rosary and Eucharistic celebration on the vigil, solemn mass and patron saint procession on the main day, and a thanksgiving mass on the final day. Alongside the liturgy, the Mandriadi (children's games), the collection of gifts through the district streets, musical evenings in the square, and the closing fireworks display take place.
