The patronal feast of the Diana district in Fiumefreddo di Sicilia

The San Vincenzo Ferreri Festival is one of the most heartfelt events in the religious calendar of Fiumefreddo di Sicilia, a town in the province of Catania nestled on the northeastern slopes of Mount Etna, along the Ionian coast between Catania and Taormina. Devotion to the Dominican saint from Valencia is particularly strong in the Diana district, where San Vincenzo Ferreri serves as patron and protector.
The celebration traditionally takes place on the third Sunday of September, when the neighborhood comes alive with festive lights, market stalls, and an atmosphere that involves the entire community. It is a neighborhood festival in the most authentic sense: born from popular piety and passed down through generations, it retains the intimate charm of traditional village celebrations.
The heart of the day is the solemn procession: in the late afternoon, the statue of San Vincenzo Ferreri leaves the small church of San Vincenzo Ferreri and is carried on shoulders through the streets of the Diana district, accompanied by the faithful, religious and civil authorities, and a marching band. The saint's passage through the festively decorated streets marks the most moving moment of the event, filled with prayers, hymns, and applause.
The church of San Vincenzo Ferreri, built around 1788, is considered the oldest in the village. Originally a private chapel for the noble Diana family—from whom the district takes its name—it is adorned with paintings and statues of historical and artistic value. In addition to the September event, the community also observes an ancient winter celebration in honor of the saint, held on February 11th.
The festival blends spiritual devotion with a more popular and convivial spirit. Beyond the solemn mass in honor of the patron saint and the procession, the program includes evening entertainment, music, and social gatherings organized by local associations. The grand finale is provided by traditional fireworks, which light up the sky over the Diana district to close the day.
The festival is part of the rich calendar of events in Fiumefreddo di Sicilia, which includes the Feast of Saint Joseph in March, celebrations for the Immaculate Conception and the Madonna della Catena, as well as various food festivals. Visiting the town during the festival is also the perfect opportunity to discover its attractions, from the Fiumefreddo River Nature Reserve to the famous Castello degli Schiavi, a jewel of 18th-century Sicilian rural Baroque.
The 2026 edition of the San Vincenzo Ferreri Festival does not yet have an official date. Following custom, the celebration is expected to take place in September, traditionally on the third Sunday, in the Diana district of Fiumefreddo di Sicilia. The program will focus on the solemn mass in honor of the patron saint, the procession of the statue through the streets of the district, and the traditional fireworks.
