Trail running on Mount San Vicino, through the woods of Frontale di Apiro
The San Vicino Marathon Trail is a mountain running event that takes place at the end of March in the hamlet of Frontale, part of the Municipality of Apiro, in the Province of Macerata (Marche Region). The start and finish are set in the square in front of the Circolo di Frontale, from where the routes climb along the slopes of Mount San Vicino, one of the symbolic mountains of the Marche Apennines.
The event offers several formats, designed for both expert athletes and those who simply want to enjoy nature:
The routes cross mountain paths classified E/EE, with challenging uphill and downhill sections, steep pastures, short gullies, and possible snow residues at higher altitudes. Along the route, refreshment points are set up in locations such as Pian dell'Elmo, Prati Alti, and Elcito, as well as a water point at the Trocchi spring.
The race takes place within the area of the Regional Nature Reserve of Mount San Vicino and Mount Canfaito, famous for the ancient beech forest of Canfaito and for the views that extend to the Adriatic Sea on clear days. Running or walking on these trails means discovering a corner of the Macerata hinterland rich in nature and silence, far from the most crowded routes.
The event is organized by ASD Trail Adventure Marche, a sports association active in the area with other events such as the Conero Trail. Beyond the competitive aspect, the San Vicino Marathon Trail is also a local festival: the small community of Frontale welcomes athletes warmly, and the finish line transforms into a convivial moment with awards for categories and a final refreshment. For trail running enthusiasts, it is one of the most anticipated spring events on the Marche calendar.
The fifth edition of the San Vicino Marathon Trail was held on Sunday, March 29, 2026, in the hamlet of Frontale, in the Municipality of Apiro (MC). The event, organized by ASD Trail Adventure Marche, re-proposed the routes on Mount San Vicino with the long course (SVT, about 21 km) and the short one (SVS, 12 km), in addition to the ecological walk. Start and finish at the Circolo di Frontale, with refreshments along the route and awards for the categories. The rankings for the edition were published on specialized trail running portals.
Typical day's program: gathering and bib collection in the morning at the Circolo di Frontale, late morning start for the competitive SVT (approx. 21 km, 1300 m D+) and SVS (12 km, 600 m D+) routes along with the non-competitive ecological walk. Refreshments at altitude in Pian dell'Elmo, Prati Alti, and Elcito; awards and final refreshment at the finish line.
Start and finish at the Circolo di Frontale, hamlet of Frontale di Apiro (MC), in the Marche region.
By car: Apiro is reachable from the SS76 (Ancona-Fabriano) and from the provincial roads of the Macerata hinterland; Frontale is located on the slopes of Mount San Vicino. By train: the nearest stations are Fabriano and Castelplanio, from where you continue by car. Reference airport: Ancona-Falconara.
Registration for competitive races is done through the ENDU platform and the channels of ASD Trail Adventure Marche. For updated regulations, costs, and times, consult the official website trailadventuremarche.it and the association's social media profiles.
As this is a mountain trail with technical sections and possible snow at altitude, appropriate clothing and footwear for running in a natural environment are recommended.
