About Christmas in San Sossio Baronia

Between the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and Epiphany, San Sossio Baronia transforms into a charming, widespread Christmas village. In this hamlet in the upper Baronia area, in the province of Avellino, the calendar is packed with Christmas markets, food stalls, concerts, the traditional Saint Lucy bonfire, Neapolitan-style bingo games, Santa's Village, and a living nativity scene. Organized by the local municipality and community associations, this free-entry festival offers a warm, family-friendly atmosphere that delights visitors of all ages.

A whole village embracing Christmas

For over a month, from the lighting of the decorations until the Epiphany, the municipality of San Sossio Baronia hosts a continuous calendar of festive events. Rather than a single event, it is a widespread celebration that fills Piazza Mercato, the town center streets, and parish spaces in this small village in the Province of Avellino, in Campania. The theme is clear from the start: a village of just over 1,500 residents that, during the coldest weeks of the year, chooses to gather together in the square.

Christmas markets, food, and crafts

The commercial and social heart of the event is the Christmas and flea market, set up in Piazza Mercato for a full day, from morning until late evening. Alongside stalls featuring handicrafts, gift ideas, and antiques, the Pro Loco Sossiana and local associations manage food stands serving wine, beer, porchetta sandwiches, hot chocolate, mulled wine, waffles, and traditional sweets. It is the time when the village truly comes alive with visitors from the neighboring towns of the Baronia area.

The Saint Lucy bonfire and religious traditions

On December 13th, the Santa Maria Assunta Parish lights the Saint Lucy bonfire, one of the most deeply rooted winter rituals in Irpinia. The fire, lit on the evening of the saint of light, symbolically marks the darkest point of the year and the anticipation of the Nativity. The entire community gathers around the flames, a custom passed down through generations in Baronia that coexists naturally with the more festive and secular parts of the program.

Neapolitan tombolata and Santa's Village

December evenings are marked by tombolata (bingo) games, played according to Neapolitan tradition, with numbers called and commented on using the Smorfia, and in some editions, enlivened by the Pulcinella mask and his cabaret. For the little ones, there is the Santa's Village: Santa's throne, the post office for dropping off letters, a sleigh, inflatables, and winter fairy-tale characters, with popcorn, waffles, and hot drinks to enjoy throughout the afternoon.

The living nativity scene and the arrival of the Befana

In the days following Christmas, the historic center hosts a living nativity scene, featuring local residents, reconstructed ancient crafts, and the Nativity set up in the most picturesque corners of the village. The festival does not end on December 25th: it continues with concerts, more tombolata games in early January, and concludes on January 6th with the Epiphany celebration and the distribution of gifts to children.

Music and concerts

The program always reserves space for live music: Christmas concerts featuring piano, percussion, and vocals, local ensembles, and repertoires alternating between holiday classics, traditional Irpinian folk songs, and contemporary tracks. Musical events are generally held in the evening, either in the square or indoors under the marquee set up for the occasion.

San Sossio Baronia and its territory

Nestled at an altitude of about 650 meters among the hills of the upper Baronia, in the far northeast of the province of Avellino, San Sossio Baronia is an agricultural village overlooking the borders with Puglia and Basilicata. The town, with its hamlets of Civita, Molara, Montuccio, Turro, and Montemauro, preserves a rural fabric based on grain, olive oil, and livestock, along with a strong sense of community. It is precisely this network of associations, the parish, and the local administration that makes such a dense schedule possible in such a small center.

How the festival is organized

  • Period: From early December to January 6th.
  • Locations: Piazza Mercato, the historic center, the parish church, and the marquee on Via XXV Luglio.
  • Entry: Free and open to all events.
  • Organization: Municipal Administration with the Youth Forum, Pro Loco Sossiana, Santa Maria Assunta Parish, and the Ciro Pennacchio Association.
  • Target audience: Families with children, residents, and visitors from the Baronia area.

The complete calendar is released annually at the end of November through the channels of the Municipality of San Sossio Baronia and the event portal of the Province of Avellino: it is always useful to check the dates before traveling.

Christmas in San Sossio Baronia — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the San Sossio Baronia Christmas festival has not yet been officially announced. As in previous years, the program is expected to run between early December and the Epiphany, featuring Christmas markets, food stalls, the Saint Lucy bonfire, tombolata games, Santa's Village, and a living nativity scene. The program is usually released in late November by the Municipality of San Sossio Baronia and the Province of Avellino's event portal.

2026 Edition: awaiting the program

As of the update of this page, the official dates and the calendar of Christmas events for 2026 in San Sossio Baronia have not yet been published. The festival, promoted by the municipal administration together with the Youth Forum, the Pro Loco Sossiana, the Santa Maria Assunta Parish, and the Ciro Pennacchio Association, has always taken place between the beginning of December and January 6th, with events concentrated in Piazza Mercato and the historic center of the Irpinian village.

We can therefore expect the same structure again this year: lighting of the decorations, markets with handicrafts and food products, the Saint Lucy bonfire, tombolata evenings, Santa's Village for children, the living nativity scene, and the Epiphany celebration. However, none of this is confirmed: dates, times, and content will only be made known with the official publication of the program, usually in the last week of November.

We recommend checking the information on the Municipality of San Sossio Baronia channels (tel. +39 0827 94022) or on the Sistema Irpinia portal of the Province of Avellino before planning your visit.
