Stalls, sweets, and religious tradition for the patron saint of Sampierdarena
The San Salvatore Fair is one of the most cherished events in Sampierdarena (formerly San Pier d'Arena), a district in the west of Genoa. The festival celebrates Jesus Most Holy Saviour, the district's patron saint, and combines religious tradition with the liveliness of a large street fair.
The event features about a hundred stalls selling various goods and sweets, mainly located near the parish church of Santa Maria della Cella and San Martino and along Via Giovanetti. The stalls offer all kinds of products, creating a festive atmosphere that attracts residents and visitors throughout the day.
The religious heart of the festival is on Sunday morning, with the solemn mass at 10 AM followed by the traditional procession through the district's streets. The venerated icon of the SS Salvatore is accompanied by the Confraternity of San Martino Morte, in a moment of strong devotional value for the community of Sampierdarena.
Organized as part of the patron saint's celebrations, the San Salvatore Fair is an example of how, in the districts of Genoa, religious festivals and popular fairs coexist in a single event. A moment that renews the identity and sense of community of San Pier d'Arena every year.
