The patron saint festival of Trisobbio, blending faith, tradition, and conviviality in the heart of the Alto Monferrato Ovadese
August 16th is a cherished date for the people of Trisobbio: it is the day the village in the Alto Monferrato Ovadese, in the province of Alessandria, pays homage to its patron saint, San Rocco, with the traditional San Rocco Procession. It is one of those events that has been part of the town's identity for generations, a moment where religious devotion and community spirit merge into a single day of celebration.
The heart of the celebration is the San Rocco Chapel, a small church located just outside the town center, offering panoramic views of the surrounding hills. This is where the locals gather every year to honor the saint, traditionally invoked as a protector against diseases and epidemics—a figure deeply loved by popular devotion throughout Italy and celebrated precisely on August 16th.
The festival is also an opportunity to discover Trisobbio, one of the most evocative villages in the province of Alessandria, awarded the Orange Flag by the Touring Club. The town is distinguished by its unique urban structure, which develops in three concentric rings around the 12th-century castle, once the home of the Malaspina and Spinola families and now municipal property. In the historic center, the 14th-century parish church of Nostra Signora Assunta and the Palazzo De Rossi Dogliotti, which houses the Town Hall, stand out.
The San Rocco Procession is not just a ritual; it is a gathering for the entire community. After the procession and the religious service, the refreshment area becomes the place to share a convivial moment, filled with conversation, local flavors, and the typical evening atmosphere of the Monferrato Ferragosto. For those visiting the area in summer, it is an authentic opportunity to experience a local tradition far from the major tourist circuits, immersed in the vineyards of Dolcetto d'Ovada and the hills of Piedmont.
