The mid-August Rione Croce festival, featuring processions, brass bands, and Sannio devotion
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The San Rocco Festival is one of the most heartfelt celebrations in Guardia Sanframondi, a hilltop village in the Province of Benevento, Campania. This is not a large-scale tourist event, but a neighborhood festival in the truest sense of the word: for several years, it has been organized by the Youth Committee of Rione Croce, the district occupying the eastern part of the historic center, centered around Piazza Croce, in front of the church dedicated to the Saint.
The calendar revolves around August 16th, the liturgical feast day of Saint Roch, naturally following the mid-August celebrations of the Assumption, the town's patron saint. The village is still in festive mode, families who have emigrated have returned for the summer, and the streets fill with life from the afternoon onwards.
The devotion of the people of Guardia to Saint Roch stems from a collective vow. The church of San Rocco, with its characteristic octagonal plan, was built in 1575 on the initiative of the inhabitants of Rione Croce while a plague was raging in the area; the temple was dedicated to the pilgrim saint recognized as a liberator from the plague and all contagious epidemics. Damaged by the 1688 earthquake, the church was rebuilt and enriched with stuccoes and paintings, including an altarpiece attributed to the Neapolitan Baroque painter Paolo de Matteis. It is a small jewel that dominates the most picturesque corner of Piazza Croce.
The traditional format, also repeated in the 2025 edition, consists of two days:
Musical accompaniment is provided by a local band: in 2025, the musicians of the "Maestro Giuseppe Mastrillo โ Cittร di Cusano Mutri" Musical Association, one of the most active bands in the Sannio Matese area, performed.
To understand the significance of this festival, one must remember that Rione Croce is the first of the four districts that open the famous Seven-Year Rites of Penance of Guardia Sanframondi, the procession of the battenti (penitents) that draws tens of thousands of people to Sannio every seven years. On that occasion, everything also begins at the church of San Rocco: at the sound of the bell, the faithful gather in Piazza Croce, compose the Misteri (living tableaux inspired by the Scriptures), and parade towards the Sanctuary of the Assumption behind the district banner. The August festival is therefore the annual, domestic version of a popular religiosity that here represents a collective identity.
The town sits halfway up the slope between the Telesina Valley and the Matese mountains, dominated by the medieval castle and a network of alleys in the historic center, partly restored and loved by foreign visitors who have bought homes there. It is a land of Sannio wines โ Falanghina, Aglianico, Coda di Volpe โ and olive oil, with historic cooperative wineries and trattorias that work at full capacity during the festival days. Combining the San Rocco procession with a walk through the village and an enogastronomic stop is the best way to experience this corner of inland Campania.
It is a festival suitable for those seeking authentic Italy: few tourists, a strong sense of community, and ancient rites celebrated without theatricality. Visitors from outside are welcomed naturally, provided they respect the religious nature of the procession.
At the moment, no official calendar has been published for the 2026 San Rocco Festival in Guardia Sanframondi, in the Province of Benevento. This is normal for this festival: it is a neighborhood event, announced by the Youth Committee of Rione Croce and the parish with only a few days' notice, usually via a notice on the Sanctuary of the Assumption website and posters displayed in the historic center.
The reference remains the liturgical feast of Saint Roch, August 16th, in the days immediately following the Assumption. Those wishing to attend can contact the local parish to find out the times of the celebrations and the procession.
The information published in this entry is based on the documented 2025 edition and does not constitute a confirmed program for 2026.
By car: From the A1 motorway, take the Caianello exit, then the SS372 Telesina towards Benevento, and exit at Guardia Sanframondi; from Naples, it takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes. By train: Telese Terme-Cerreto Sannita station on the Naples-Benevento line, about 10 km away, with bus connections to the town. By plane: Naples-Capodichino Airport, about 70 km away.
The celebrations take place in the historic center: the Sanctuary of the Assumption, the streets of Rione Croce, and Largo Croce, in front of the octagonal church of San Rocco. All locations are within walking distance, but the village is hilly and paved with stone: comfortable shoes are recommended.
Participation in religious rites and musical events is free. During the days around Ferragosto (mid-August), the town is very busy: it is advisable to park in the areas below the historic center and walk up. For accommodation, there are B&Bs and farmhouses in Guardia Sanframondi and nearby Telese Terme, but booking in advance is essential in August.
The detailed program is released a few days before the festival by the Youth Committee of Rione Croce and published by the parish on the Sanctuary of the Assumption website.
