The San Rocco feast in the historic center of Vasto
The San Rocco Bell Festival is one of the most iconic and cherished events of the summer in Vasto, a town on the Trabocchi Coast in the province of Chieti, Abruzzo. Every year on August 16th, the day dedicated to Saint Roch, the historic center comes alive from the early morning with a continuous, cheerful chiming that accompanies residents and tourists as they browse the stalls.
The heart of the event is the bell, the absolute star of the market that takes over Piazza Rossetti and the surrounding streets. Merchants, artisans, and hobbyists display bells of every size, shape, and color: in painted terracotta, ceramic, brass, and glass, alongside wicker goods and traditional Abruzzese handicrafts. It is a local tradition for those strolling through the town to purchase at least one bell, often as a collectible, choosing a different one each year to keep or give as a gift.
The choice of the bell is no coincidence: it stems from the devotion to Saint Roch, the pilgrim saint remembered as the protector of wayfarers and, by extension, travelers. Tradition depicts him with a staff to which a bell was attached, signaling his passage along the roads he traveled during his pilgrimage in Italy. Hence the Vasto custom of celebrating the saint with the sound of bells, which fills the entire historic center for a day.
The religious and commercial aspects are complemented by music and popular culture. At 10:00 AM, along Corso Nuova Italia, a folk group performs a concert, accompanying the festival with traditional Abruzzese songs and creating a festive atmosphere that delights both adults and children. The day thus combines a stroll through the town center, a love for tradition, and the rediscovery of handmade crafts.
Promoted and supported by the Municipality of Vasto, the Bell Festival is considered a true gem of the Vasto summer: an event with deep historical roots that promotes local craftsmanship, supports city center businesses, and keeps alive a collective ritual passed down from generation to generation. For Vasto and the entire Trabocchi Coast, it represents one of the most characteristic appointments of the mid-August calendar.
For the 2026 edition, the San Rocco Bell Festival is confirmed for August 16th in the historic center of Vasto. Stalls featuring bells and Abruzzese crafts will animate Piazza Rossetti and the surrounding streets from the early morning.
