About San Pio Festival

The San Pio Festival is the first major summer event in Terzigno, a town in the Vesuvius area of the Naples Metropolitan City. Two evenings of music in the square, tied to the popular devotion to Saint Pio of Pietrelcina, open the summer calendar every year: an outdoor stage, Neapolitan artists, families, young people, and visitors from neighboring towns. A modest yet highly attended event where religious tradition, a sense of community, and live entertainment meet in the town square.

A popular festival at the foot of Mount Vesuvius

For years, the San Pio Festival has been the first major summer event in Terzigno, a town on the southeastern slopes of Mount Vesuvius, in the province of Naples, in the heart of Campania. Every year, at the end of June, the town square is transformed into a large open-air venue with a stage, lights, and a sound system: two consecutive evenings that mark the start of the events season and attract not only the locals but also audiences from nearby Vesuvius towns.

This is not a manufactured festival; it is a community celebration born from the popular devotion to Saint Pio of Pietrelcina, a beloved figure throughout Southern Italy and particularly in Campania, the birthplace of the Capuchin friar. Around this devotion, a civic and musical appointment has solidified over time, which is now one of the most anticipated in the Terzigno calendar.

Two nights of music in the square

The heart of the festival lies in the two nights of free concerts. The formula is simple and proven: a stage in the square, artists from the contemporary Neapolitan music scene, and an audience that fills the space until late at night. The program focuses primarily on modern Neapolitan songs and folk music, with entertainment and activities that also involve families with children.

  • Outdoor stage in the town's main square
  • Two consecutive nights of live music, usually at the end of June
  • Artists from the contemporary Neapolitan and neomelodic scene
  • Free admission, no tickets or pre-sales required
  • Food and drink stalls located around the square

Organizers

The organization of the festival is managed by the Accademia Night Dance School, led by Fabio Autorino, who oversees the setup and artistic direction of the evenings. The event takes place with the support of the Municipality of Terzigno and the oversight of the Municipal Police, the Civil Protection, the NOT โ€“ Environmental Protection association, and law enforcement, who ensure safety and traffic management during the two nights.

San Pio, a devotion rooted in Campania

Saint Pio of Pietrelcina, born Francesco Forgione, was born in Pietrelcina, in the province of Benevento: this is why his figure is so present in Campanian popular religiosity, among images in homes, neighborhood votive shrines, and street festivals dedicated to the friar. In Terzigno, the festival does not take the solemn form of a large patronal feast, but rather the more familiar one of a community celebration: families head to the square, neighbors meet, and music is enjoyed together until late at night.

Terzigno and the Vesuvius area

Terzigno has about 17,000 inhabitants and is located within the Vesuvius National Park, between San Giuseppe Vesuviano, Boscoreale, and Poggiomarino. It is a highly fertile agricultural territory, known for the cultivation of vegetables and the vineyards of the Vesuvius area, just a few kilometers from the Pompeii Archaeological Park and the gulf coast. Those arriving for the festival can easily combine the evening with a day spent among the archaeological sites, the trails of the National Park, and the wineries on the Vesuvius slopes.

Atmosphere and tips

The atmosphere is typical of Southern summer festivals: dry heat, a crowded square, music heard from afar, children running between chairs, and groups of friends staying until the end. It is advisable to arrive a little early to find a spot near the stage and park easily in the surrounding streets, as the square is closed to traffic. The evenings start after dinner and continue until late: it is an outdoor event, so it is best to bring something light to wear for the cooler hours.

Why it is worth visiting

Anyone wanting to understand how summer is experienced in the Vesuvius towns will find the San Pio Festival in Terzigno an excellent starting point: no tickets, no tourist filters, just a square that sings. It is an authentic, free event accessible to everyone, combining popular devotion, Neapolitan music, and village life over two nights in late June.
