About San Nicola la Strada Half-Marathon

The San Nicola la Strada City Half-Marathon is the most popular road race in the Caserta area. Every June 2nd, on Republic Day, hundreds of runners set off from Piazza Parrocchia to tackle a flat, fast, and accurately measured 9.999 km city loop. Organized by ASD Atletica San Nicola with the patronage of Pro Loco Calatia, the race attracts athletes from across Campania and Southern Italy, featuring a race pack, finisher medals, and an awards ceremony at the Villa Borbonica.

The most anticipated race in San Nicola la Strada

The San Nicola la Strada City Half-Marathon, also known as the San Nicola la Strada City Trophy, is the most important and well-attended sporting event in the municipality of San Nicola la Strada, in the province of Caserta, Campania. It is a road running race that every year on June 2ndโ€”Republic Dayโ€”transforms the city streets into a monitored loop, with the start and finish line in Piazza Parrocchia, in the heart of the town.

Born as a local appointment, the Half-Marathon has grown to become a reference point in the regional FIDAL Campania running calendar. In recent editions, it has consistently gathered between 700 and 900 athletes at the start, coming from across the region, neighboring provinces, and various regions of Central and Southern Italy.

The course: 9.999 km, flat and lightning-fast

The route is entirely urban, measured, and signposted, covering 9.999 km along a completely flat loop. This is precisely the feature that makes the race so beloved by runners: the lack of elevation gain and the smooth asphalt make it an ideal course for setting a personal best over the 10 km distance.

  • Start and finish in Piazza Parrocchia, in the city center
  • Entirely urban route, measured and monitored along the entire loop
  • Electronic timing with a chip attached to the bib or a personal chip to be fixed to the ankle
  • Water stations along the route and a final refreshment point at the finish
  • Medical assistance, Municipal Police, local Civil Protection unit, and volunteers guarding the course

The 22nd edition

The 22nd edition took place on Tuesday, June 2nd, 2026, with the start at 8:30 AM. A total of 742 athletes (646 men and 96 women) stood at the start line, representing 106 clubs and over ten Italian regions, as well as San Marino; 681 runners crossed the finish line. The men's victory went to Hicham Boufars (International Security Service) in 31'42", ahead of Hajjaj El Jebli (Bitonto Runners); among the women, Filomena Palomba (Caivano Runners) won in 38'49", preceding her sister Francesca Palomba, the outgoing champion. The team classification was won by Road Runners Maddaloni.

The edition was officially presented on Wednesday, May 27th, 2026, in the Salone Borbonico of Piazza Municipio, with a thematic meeting dedicated to the topic "Running: the balance between well-being and injury."

Organization and local roots

The event is organized by ASD Atletica San Nicola, chaired by Pietro Maienza, with the patronage of Pro Loco Calatia and the support of the Municipal Administration, the Municipal Police, and the local Civil Protection unit. Race commentary is provided by speaker Gennaro Varrella.

Running in San Nicola la Strada means crossing a municipality that, despite being integrated into the urban area of Caserta, preserves important traces of its history: the route of the ancient Appian Way, the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli started in 1762 under the guidance of Luigi Vanvitelli, and the Real Convitto Borbonico della Madonna delle Grazie, now home to the municipal library. The awards ceremonies are traditionally held at the Villa Borbonica.

Registration, race pack, and prizes

The race is reserved for adult athletes registered with FIDAL or sports promotion bodies recognized by CONI; independent athletes are not allowed. The registration fee is 9 euros (10 euros for those without a personal chip), and registration closes upon reaching 900 participants. The first 900 registrants receive a race pack, plus a pizzeria voucher and a medal for all finishers. Awards are also given to the top ten clubs with at least thirty athletes reaching the finish line.

A date to mark on the calendar

With its fixed date on Republic Day, the Half-Marathon is now part of the civic calendar of San Nicola la Strada: an event that combines popular sport, a town festival, and the promotion of the Caserta territory, having built a solid reputation over the years well beyond the borders of Campania.
