The patronal feast of Frigento, featuring a solemn mass, procession, and fair in the historic center
Every year on June 14th, the town of Frigento, in the province of Avellino (Campania), celebrates its patron saint, San Marciano. Perched at over 900 meters on a ridge overlooking the Valle d'Ansanto and the Valle dell'Ufita, the village experiences its most heartfelt identity-defining event of the year: festive bells, a solemn mass, a procession with the saint's statue through the historic center, and, in the evening, the secular festivities at the Villa Comunale.
This is not a tourist-driven event, but a devotion that has spanned centuries and still draws emigrants and families from across Irpinia and Italy back to Frigento. For visitors, it is the perfect opportunity to experience an authentic Italian village feast, completely unfiltered.
Hagiographic tradition tells of a man of Greek origin, born into a wealthy family, who gave away his possessions to the poor, widows, and orphans to embrace an ascetic life, later retiring as a hermit in Frigento. According to tradition, he was consecrated bishop of the city by Pope Leo the Great in the 5th century. While scholars debate this, as Frigento only became a bishopric in the Middle Ages, the cult remains strong and unbroken.
Popular devotion links the saint to numerous miracles, including the liberation of Frigento from an epidemic. His relics were translated in 839 to the Abbey of Santa Sofia in Benevento. San Marciano is also the patron saint of Taurasi, another Irpinian town: an ancient bond recently rediscovered through joint celebrations between the two communities.
The festival program is divided into religious and secular segments throughout the day:
The event is organized by the Parish and the Patronal Feast Committee, with the support of the Municipal Administration.
The heart of local devotion is the Church of San Marciano, located along the road leading to the historic center (SP76). The current building dates back to the 18th century, but the reuse of Roman materials and written records from 754 suggest a much older origin. Excavations in the adjacent gardens have revealed traces of an ancient place of worship built on a necropolis. Inside, the main altar houses a beautiful painting of the saint, surrounded by fragments of classical inscriptions and ex-voto offerings.
The San Marciano festival traditionally marks the opening of the Estate Frigentina, the summer program promoted by the Municipality and local associations, which brings theater, book presentations, vintage car rallies, sports, and children's activities to the village from June to August. Highlights of the following weeks include the chickling pea festival, the accordion festival, and the Ferragosto celebrations with the straw float parade.
Frigento, with just over four thousand inhabitants and listed among the 'Borghi piรน belli d'Italia' (Most Beautiful Villages in Italy), is one of the great panoramic balconies of inland Campania: on clear days, the view spans five regions, from Campania to Molise, Basilicata, Puglia, and Abruzzo. The village preserves Roman cisterns from the Republican era, the former cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, and a medieval urban fabric restored after the 1980 earthquake. Arriving here on June 14th means finding all this brought to life by the festival, with families in the streets and the scents of Irpinian cuisine wafting from the houses.
On June 14, 2026, Frigento renewed its devotion to its patron saint San Marciano with the traditional festivities, the first event of the Estate Frigentina 2026 calendar, promoted by the Municipal Administration together with local associations and running from June 8th to August 27th.
As per tradition, the day combined liturgical moments โ the solemn mass and the procession with the saint's statue through the historic center โ with the secular side of the feast, featuring the fair along Via San Marciano and the final evening at the Villa Comunale.
The eve of the festivities was marked by a significant event: Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at 7:00 PM, the Mother Church of Taurasi hosted the celebration 'San Marciano, a sign of unity between Taurasi and Frigento', presided over by Archbishop Pasquale Cascio, with the participation of the mayors of both towns, parish priests, and civil and religious authorities. A moment designed to enhance the shared devotion and the religious and cultural heritage that binds the two Irpinian communities.
The musical part of the festival was held at the Villa Comunale of Frigento with the group 'Three of the Pop', in a free-entry evening open to residents and visitors. It is the event that, every year, symbolically marks the beginning of the Frigentian summer and fills the village's viewpoint with families and young people.
The festival opens the Estate Frigentina 2026 program, which continues until August 27th with theater performances, book presentations, a motorcycle rally, excursions, vintage car parades, food festivals, and activities for children.

Frigento is located at an altitude of over 900 meters: even in June, evenings can be cool, so bring a light jacket. The historic center is hilly and partially paved with cobblestones: comfortable shoes are recommended.
