About San Lanno

Every year during the first week of May, Vasanello gathers to honor its patron saint, San Lanno Martire, with a festival that weaves together faith, folk tradition, and spectacular entertainment. Featuring processions with the relics of the young soldier martyred in 296 AD, free concerts in Piazza della Repubblica beneath the Orsini Castle, tournaments, exhibitions, bingo, and a grand pyromusical finale, the village in the Viterbo Tuscia region experiences its most vibrant days, organized annually by rotating class committees.

A week of celebration in the heart of Tuscia

Every year at the beginning of May, Vasanello—a village in the province of Viterbo, Lazio—experiences the most anticipated days of its calendar: the festivities in honor of its patron saint, San Lanno Martire. For about a week, the historic center, dominated by the Orsini Castle, comes alive with processions, free concerts, sports tournaments, exhibitions, and fireworks, in a blend of religious devotion and popular celebration that engages all generations and draws visitors from across the Tuscia region.

San Lanno, the young soldier from Cologne

The history of the patron saint is among the most unique in Lazio. Lando—known as "Lanno" in the local dialect—was a young nobleman born in Cologne, Germany, around 280 AD, who enlisted as an officer in the imperial army at a very young age. After moving to Lazio, he encountered the Christian faith and declared himself a "Knight of Christ," for which he was tried and sentenced to death during the Diocletian persecutions. He was beheaded on May 5, 296, outside the walls of ancient Bassanello, on the site where the chapel dedicated to him now stands; according to tradition, on his way to his execution, he restored sight to a man blind from birth.

His relics, rediscovered on March 25, 1628, and recognized by the Congregation of Rites in 1630, are kept in the crypt of the church of Santa Maria Assunta, inside a wax statue created in 1827 by the wax modeler Gioacchino Mortula. The Confraternity of San Lanno, documented as early as 1584, testifies to how ancient and deeply rooted the cult is.

The class committees: a tradition alive since 1945

Since 1945, the festival has been organized on a rotating basis by class committees: each year, those born in the same year take charge of organizing the festivities, raising funds, and building the program together with the municipal administration. It is a mechanism that continuously renews the sense of belonging: in 2025 it was the turn of the Class of 1984, and in 2026 the Class of 1985, led by president Gianluca Biagini. A custom that makes the festival a true collective ritual of local identity.

Faith and tradition

The religious heart of the festival falls on May 5, 6, and 7: May 5 commemorates the saint's martyrdom, and May 7 the translation of his body. The most solemn moment is the mass concelebrated by the Bishop and the procession with the patron's relics through the streets of the village, accompanied by the "G. Porri" musical band and the entire community, amidst rosaries, liturgies, and hymns such as the patronal anthem composed in 1939. Furthermore, every ten years, the festival is celebrated with particular solemnity.

Free concerts and major guests

Alongside the religious rites, the stage set up in Piazza della Repubblica, at the foot of the Orsini Castle, hosts free evening shows that have brought top names in Italian music to Vasanello over the years: in 2025 Giusy Ferreri, and in 2026 Nomadi, Italy's longest-running band. The program is completed by 90s-themed parties, dance orchestras, fashion shows, card and fishing tournaments, a bingo game with a rich prize pool, and the pyromusical show that closes the festivities.

Vasanello and the Viterbo Tuscia

The festival is also an opportunity to discover the municipality of Vasanello, a village known for its artisanal ceramic tradition, with the Orsini Castle linked to the memory of Giulia Farnese and the Romanesque churches of Santa Maria Assunta and San Salvatore. A few kilometers from Orte and the major transport routes between Rome and Umbria, Vasanello is an ideal gateway to the Tuscia, a land of medieval villages, ravines, and the genuine flavors of the Lazio region.

San Lanno — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the San Lanno Festival, organized by the Class of 1985 committee chaired by Gianluca Biagini in collaboration with the municipal administration, brought Vasanello to life from May 2 to 8. A week of religious celebrations, tournaments, and free shows culminated on Wednesday, May 6, with the major concert by Nomadi in Piazza della Repubblica, closing with a pyromusical show and a bingo game with a 2,000-euro prize pool.

From May 2 to 8, 2026, Vasanello celebrated its patron saint, San Lanno Martire, with a program created by the Class of 1985 committee. The opening on Saturday, May 2, transformed Piazza della Repubblica into an open-air disco with the "Crazy 90s" party, while a painting exhibition was inaugurated in the parish hall. The following days featured a fishing competition, archery demonstrations, theater, a blood donation day, a children's play area, and youth and card tournaments.

The religious heart took place on Tuesday, May 5, the anniversary of the martyrdom, with a mass concelebrated by the Bishop and the solemn procession with the patron's relics through the village streets. On Wednesday, May 6, at 10:00 PM, the most anticipated moment occurred: the free concert by Nomadi, which drew audiences from across the Tuscia and neighboring provinces. Thursday, May 7, featured the grand finale with a concert by the "G. Porri" musical band, a bingo game with a 2,000-euro prize pool, and a midnight pyromusical show; the lottery draw on Friday, May 8, concluded the festivities.
