San Giuseppe the "Fritter-maker"
In Rome, Saint Joseph is affectionately called "San Giuseppe frittellaro" (the fritter-maker). The nickname stems from a centuries-old tradition in the capital's districts of frying rice fritters and cream-filled puffs for March 19th. Fritter stalls once occupied entire streets, and today, local pastry shops and festival stands still churn them out non-stop. A Jubilee edition
The 2026 San Giuseppe District Festival opened on March 15th and concluded on March 23rd, confirming the format established in 2025 with the financial support of the Municipality I of Rome. The extraordinary highlight of this edition was the exhibition, within the Basilica of San Giuseppe al Trionfale, of the relics of Saint Joseph's mantle and Mary's veil, which were available for veneration from March 16th to 19th.
Devotion and popular celebration
The spiritual journey began as early as March 9th with the translation of the saint's statue to the high altar, followed by the evening novena and the triduum from March 16th to 18th. On March 19th, the Solemnity of San Giuseppe, the day began with a 7:30 AM mass and the blessing of the San Giuseppe bread distributed to the faithful, continuing with masses throughout the morning and afternoon. Meanwhile, the streets of Trionfale were filled with market stalls, food stands, and the aroma of fried treats.

Metro A, Cipro or Ottaviano-San Pietro stops, then a 10-minute walk. Numerous bus lines serve Via Andrea Doria and Piazza Risorgimento. By train: Roma San Pietro station or Roma Termini with Metro A. Driving is discouraged: the area has heavy traffic and limited parking.

Free event; religious celebrations are open to the public. Only food at stalls and charity raffle tickets require payment (donations to support the Oratory).
Tips
March 19th is the main day: arrive in the afternoon for the procession and stay for the bonfires and fireworks. Fritters and cream puffs sell out quickly by early afternoon.
