About San Giorgio Estate

Every July, Largo San Giorgio, one of the most charming squares in the historic centre of Rieti, transforms into an open-air stage. San Giorgio Estate is a festival promoted by the Fondazione Varrone, featuring concerts, theatrical performances, and evenings of classical music, opera, jazz, and singer-songwriter performances. Events take place on Thursday and Friday evenings at 9:00 PM, with free admission until all seats are filled.

The heart of summer in the heart of the city

San Giorgio Estate is the summer festival that brings Largo San Giorgio to life every July—one of the most evocative corners of the historic centre of Rieti, the capital of the province of the same name in Lazio. Promoted by the Fondazione Varrone - Cassa di Risparmio di Rieti, the event brings three weeks of music, theatre, and culture to an intimate square surrounded by historic buildings, turning it into an open-air arena that welcomes both local residents and visiting tourists.

A deliberately eclectic programme

The festival's formula is simple and recognisable: events are concentrated on Thursday and Friday evenings, always starting at 9:00 PM, with free admission until all seats are taken. The programme does not limit itself to a single genre: within a few evenings, you can experience everything from classical music to opera, jazz to swing, operetta to spoken theatre, and singer-songwriter hits to Mediterranean and Eastern sounds.

  • Classical and early music — ensembles and chamber groups, with forays into the Baroque repertoire and non-European musical traditions.
  • Opera and operetta — informative evenings and light-hearted performances designed even for those new to melodrama.
  • Jazz and swing — orchestras and quintets reinterpreting the great Italian and international songbooks.
  • Singer-songwriter music and original projects — concept albums, tributes to great songwriters, and emerging local voices.
  • Theatre and dance — prose productions, comedy shows, and multidisciplinary stagings.

Local artists and nationally renowned names

One of the most appreciated aspects of the festival is the balance between musicians from Rieti and the Sabina region, who find a qualified showcase here, and nationally renowned artists invited to open or close the weeks of programming. Recent editions have featured tributes to the greats of Italian music, jazz orchestras, theatre companies, and young opera singers in training, following an artistic project that prioritises the quality of the proposal over the fame of the names on the poster.

A project to enhance the historic centre

San Giorgio Estate is not just a programme of shows: it is also an act of urban regeneration. By bringing audiences and evening activity back to a square in the ancient core, the Fondazione Varrone helps keep the most fragile part of the city alive—the part that risks emptying out during the summer. Local businesses and venues participate indirectly in the initiative, which generates a constant flow of people on weekday evenings. The event is held under the patronage of the Municipality of Rieti and the Province of Rieti.

Rieti, the Sabina region, and the navel of Italy

Rieti is one of the least crowded art cities in Lazio, which makes it particularly enjoyable. The historic centre preserves its medieval layout, the Bishop's Palace with its famous Vault, the Roman bridge, and the 13th-century city walls; the city also claims the title of Umbilicus Italiae, the geographical centre of the Italian peninsula. Surrounding it is the Sabina region, a land of extra virgin DOP olive oil, abbeys, and the sanctuaries of the Holy Valley linked to the preaching of Saint Francis. An evening at Largo San Giorgio can therefore become an opportunity to discover a territory that combines nature, spirituality, and gastronomy just over an hour from Rome.

Why it's worth visiting

It is a high-quality, free festival in a human-scale square where listening is truly possible. Those who arrive a little early can easily find a seat, have dinner in the centre, and enjoy the show in the fresh evening air of Rieti. It is a sober and effective model of cultural programming that has been one of the most anticipated summer events in the Sabina capital for years.
