About San Giorgio Bonfire

The Focarone di San Giorgio is one of the most evocative traditions of Castel Viscardo, a municipality in the Orvieto area of the province of Terni. On the occasion of Saint George's feast day, the communities of Castel Viscardo and Viceno gather for a procession accompanied by a band and for the lighting of a large bonfire, the 'focarone', in Parco del Pinaro: a ritual that unites faith, music, and popular conviviality under the glow of the flames.

The ritual of the great bonfire

The San Giorgio Bonfire is one of the most cherished traditions of Castel Viscardo, a municipality in the Orvieto area of the province of Terni. On the occasion of Saint George's feast day, the communities of Castel Viscardo and the hamlet of Viceno renew the appointment with a ritual that unites faith, music, and popular conviviality, culminating in the lighting of a large bonfire (focarone).

From the procession to Parco del Pinaro

The celebration begins in the heart of the village, in Piazza Cimicchi, from where the 'G. Verdi' band leads the procession through the village streets with its music. The procession reaches Parco del Pinaro, where the large bonfire is lit, around which the community gathers for the feast, with popular music and toasts.

A community tradition

The event is organized by the Partecipanza Agraria of Castel Viscardo-Viceno, the Pro Loco of Castel Viscardo, and the Parish of the SS.ma Annunziata, under the patronage of the Municipality and with the collaboration of the 'G. Verdi' band and the Municipal Civil Protection Group. The Focarone represents an important cultural and religious moment for the community, intertwining devotion to Saint George with the village festival, in one of the most authentic corners of southern Umbria.
