The pane cunzato festivals in the hamlets of Mascali, on the slopes of Mount Etna

Among the most cherished gastronomic traditions of the Mascali summer are the Pane Condito Festivals, dedicated to the famous Sicilian pane cunzato. The evenings take place in the hillside hamlets of the Municipality of Mascali, in the Metropolitan City of Catania (Sicily), on the eastern slopes of Mount Etna: one festival brings the hamlet of Sant'Antonino to life at the beginning of August, while the other does the same for Montargano at the end of the month.
Pane condito is a symbol of Sicilian peasant cuisine: warm bread sliced open and "dressed" with extra virgin olive oil, tomatoes, oregano, anchovies, cheese, and, depending on local variations, other local ingredients. At the Mascali festivals, pane cunzato is prepared and served according to the traditional recipe, accompanying an evening of tastings that highlights local products and the authentic flavors of the Etna hamlets.
The two festivals are part of the broader 'Mascali in Festa' summer program, promoted by the municipal administration to enliven the town and its numerous hamletsโfrom the coast of Fondachello to the hillside hamlets of Santa Venera Alta, Montargano, and Sant'Antonino. The summer program weaves together live music, theater, cabaret, dance performances, and gastronomic events, with the stated goal of creating moments of community and promoting the culture and traditions of each hamlet.
Mascali is a municipality with a unique history: the town center was rebuilt after being almost entirely destroyed by the 1928 Etna lava flow. Today, its territory stretches from the sea to the slopes of the volcano, and the hamlets keep alive festivals, fairs, and popular traditions that mark the summer season. The Pane Condito Festivals are among the most genuine events for discovering the conviviality and flavors of this corner of Sicily.
Open-air, free, and open to everyone, the festivals attract residents, vacationers, and curious visitors who head up to the hillside hamlets to enjoy freshly prepared pane cunzato and experience the atmosphere of an authentic village festival, filled with music, conversation, and tradition.
The official program and dates for the 2026 edition of the Pane Condito Festivals in Mascali have not yet been published. Traditionally, the festivals take place in August in the hamlets of Sant'Antonino and Montargano, as part of the 'Mascali in Festa' summer program. It is recommended to check the official channels of the Municipality of Mascali for updates.
