About San Gennaro Festival

Every September, Pozzuoli honors Saint Gennaro at the very site of his martyrdom: the Sanctuary of San Gennaro alla Solfatara, built in the 16th century over the stone where he was beheaded. A novena, solemn masses, a procession of the saint's bust through the parish streets, and a social program featuring food stalls, theatrical performances, music, and fireworks bring the upper district of this Phlegraean city to life, blending popular devotion with an authentic local fair atmosphere.

A festival at the site of the martyrdom

The San Gennaro Festival in Pozzuoli is not a devotion imported from Naples: it is a celebration of the exact spot where, according to tradition, the Bishop of Benevento was beheaded alongside his companions during the Diocletian persecutions around 305 AD. Spared by the beasts of the Flavian Amphitheatre, Gennaro was led to the forum vulcani, the steaming area we now call Solfatara, at the gates of the town of Pozzuoli, in the Metropolitan City of Naples, Campania. For centuries, the sanctuary has stood on that stone, becoming the heart of the festival every September.

The Sanctuary of San Gennaro alla Solfatara

The building was constructed between 1574 and 1580 and became a parish church in 1945, dedicated to the holy martyrs Gennaro, Festo, and Desiderio. It is entrusted to the Capuchin Friars Minor, who oversee both the liturgical and social programs. Although the official patron saint of the city is Saint Proculus, Pozzuoli is viscerally linked to Gennaro, who appears on the city's coat of arms alongside the other six martyrs of Puteoli.

The religious program

The celebrations begin with the preparatory novena: the recitation of the rosary in the late afternoon followed by evening mass, presided over in turn by priests from the Diocese of Pozzuoli. On September 19, the saint's feast day, masses are held throughout the day, from early morning until evening; the main late-morning celebration is led by the Bishop of Pozzuoli, while the evening mass is entrusted to the Provincial Minister of the Capuchins. This is also the day when, in Naples, the liquefaction of the blood is awaited: news of the miracle reaches the Phlegraean churchyard promptly, greeted by the applause of the faithful.

The bust and the procession

During the days of the solemnity, the bust of San Gennaro is displayed on the church parvis, facing the square which fills with the faithful. The most anticipated moment remains the procession: at the end of an afternoon mass, the bust leaves the sanctuary and travels through the streets of the parish in the upper part of Pozzuoli, amidst decorated balconies, festive lights, and families waiting on their doorsteps.

The social program: stalls, shows, and fireworks

Alongside the liturgy, there is the community celebration. Along the road to the sanctuary, food stalls offering Phlegraean and Neapolitan specialties are set up in the evenings, while theater companies and singer-songwriters take turns on stage. Recent editions have featured the Compagnia Triccabballacche, singer-songwriter Jovine, and entertainment by the Compagnia Arcobaleno Bianco together with the Gi.Fra. and the Franciscan Family. The event concludes with the charity lottery draw and a fireworks display that illuminates the sky above the Solfatara crater.

What to see around the festival

The festival is an opportunity to discover a part of the Phlegraean Fields often overlooked by tourist circuits: the Flavian Amphitheatre, one of the largest in Italy; the Rione Terra with its underground archaeological route; the Temple of Serapis overlooking the port; and, of course, the volcanic area of the Solfatara. The San Gennaro district, located on the hill, offers a view over the gulf and the islands on the horizon during the September evenings.

A popular and free event

Celebrations and shows take place outdoors and are free to attend: you only pay for what you consume at the stalls or for lottery tickets. It is a neighborhood festival rather than a major tourist event, and for this very reason, it retains a rare authenticity, perfect for those who want to understand how devotion to San Gennaro is truly experienced in Campania.

San Gennaro Festival — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the San Gennaro Festival in Pozzuoli has not yet been officially announced. The saint's feast day traditionally falls in September, and celebrations are concentrated, as every year, at the Sanctuary of San Gennaro alla Solfatara and the parish streets. The detailed program, including the novena, masses, procession of the bust, and social events, is usually released by the parish and the local Phlegraean press shortly before the event.

At the moment, no official dates or program have been published for the 2026 San Gennaro Festival in Pozzuoli. The event is linked to the saint's feast day, which occurs in September, and has always taken place at the Sanctuary of San Gennaro alla Solfatara, in the town of Pozzuoli (Metropolitan City of Naples, Campania), at the site traditionally identified as the place of his martyrdom.

Based on previous editions, the festival is structured into a religious program—preparatory novena, solemn masses on the feast day, and a procession of the bust through the parish streets—and an evening social program with food stalls, theatrical performances, music, a charity lottery, and fireworks. However, none of this is confirmed for 2026 until the parish releases the official poster.

For updated information, it is advisable to contact the sanctuary parish directly or follow the local Phlegraean press channels. This page will be updated as soon as the 2026 program is made public.
