The patron saint's feast in the seaside village of San Foca, Melendugno
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The San Foca Patronal Feast is the heart of summer in the marina of San Foca, a coastal district of the municipality of Melendugno in the province of Lecce, on the Adriatic coast of Salento. Every year in mid-August, the small fishing village gathers around its patron saint, Saint Phocas the Martyr, venerated as the protector of seafarers. The festival fuses religious devotion with popular celebration, drawing residents, vacationers, and tourists who flock to the coast at the height of the summer season.
The most evocative and defining moment is the traditional sea procession. The statue of Saint Phocas, kept in the Maria Santissima Assunta church, is taken to sea aboard the most beautifully decorated fishing boat in the harbor, followed by a parade of local fishing and leisure vessels. Weather permitting, the procession travels along the coast as far as the stunning marina of Torre dell'Orso. It is an ancient rite that renews the deep bond between the community of San Foca and its sea.
Alongside the sacred rites, the festival offers a rich entertainment program. The evenings are enlivened by grand brass band concerts from renowned Apulian ensembles, as well as illuminations and market stalls that brighten the village streets. The highlight is the concert in Piazza del Popolo, which over the years has hosted artists from the Salento and national music scenes, transforming the marina into a grand stage under the stars.
An authentic expression of Salento folk traditions, the San Foca Patronal Feast is organized by the Patronal Feast Committee together with the Maria SS. Assunta Parish and with the support of the Municipality of Melendugno. More than just a summer event, it represents an identity-defining heritage of the Adriatic Puglia, where faith, maritime memory, and conviviality have been intertwined for generations.
At the moment, the official dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced by the organizers. The feast is traditionally held in mid-August in the marina of San Foca: we recommend checking the final program on the channels of the San Foca Pro Loco and the Municipality of Melendugno as the event approaches.
The 2026 San Foca Patronal Feast will return as every year to celebrate the patron saint of the Melendugno marina, with religious rites, the sea procession, and concerts in Piazza del Popolo. The official dates and detailed program have not yet been released: this page will be updated as soon as the Patronal Feast Committee publishes the calendar for the 2026 edition.
