In Piancastagnaio, a charming village in the province of Siena nestled on the south-eastern slopes of Mount Amiata, the San Filippo Neri Patronal Feast is one of the most cherished events of the year. The celebration, held on May 26th—the day the Church honors the Florentine saint—transforms the streets and squares of the historic centre into a sequence of religious rites and popular festivities that involve the entire community.

San Filippo Neri, the saint of joy

San Filippo Neri (1515-1595), born in Florence and later moved to Rome, is known as the saint of joy and youth, remembered for his famous motto "Be good, if you can." Founder of the Oratory, he dedicated his life to young people, dialogue, and hospitality. In Piancastagnaio, his cult is deeply rooted and exists alongside that of Saint Bartholomew, who is also linked to the religious history of this Amiata village.

Festival highlights

The program begins in the preceding days with a triduum of preparation and continues with the transfer of the Saint's statue, carried in procession from the Church of San Filippo Neri to the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta. The eve of the feast offers one of the most characteristic and anticipated spectacles: the release of the hot-air balloon from the Nasini Gardens, a tradition that draws crowds of all ages with their eyes turned skyward.
