The San Donato Festival in the heart of Corropoli

The San Donato Festival is one of the most cherished summer events in Corropoli, a village in the Val Vibrata area of the Teramo province, in the heart of Abruzzo. Held in early August, the event bridges the gap between religious devotion and popular celebration, drawing both residents and visitors into the historic town center.
Corropoli's bond with San Donato spans over two centuries. A church dedicated to the Saint was built along the road connecting the crossroads to the historic center, and the avenue was named Viale Piane San Donato in his honor. Historically, the Saint's feast day coincided with an important market fair, serving as a vital hub for trade and social interaction across the Val Vibrata region. Even today, the traditional stalls of the nut sellers remain around the church, a living testament to that ancient commercial heritage.
The most solemn moment of the festival is the procession, when the statue of San Donato is carried on shoulders through the town streets, from the Saint's church to the nearby Church of the Holy Spirit, accompanied by a marching band and the faithful. Holy Masses mark the day dedicated to the patron saint in an atmosphere of quiet devotion.
Alongside the religious observances, the festival offers a rich program of secular events. Evenings come alive with comedy shows, live music, and concerts in the square, while food stalls serve up traditional Abruzzese flavors. There is plenty of space for the little ones, with games and activities designed for families.
Organized by the Spirito Santo Association with the patronage of the Municipality of Corropoli, the San Donato Festival is a wonderful opportunity to discover the hospitality and traditions of this Teramo village, where faith intertwines with conviviality and community spirit.
