About San Cono Festival

At the beginning of June, Teggiano gathers around its patron saint, San Cono, for three days of faith, music, and popular tradition. Deeply felt throughout the Vallo di Diano and the Diocese of Teggiano-Policastro, the festival blends solemn vespers, a pontifical mass in the Cathedral, and the procession of the relic through the medieval alleys with brass band concerts, town square performances, and the fireworks that conclude the festivities. A defining event that draws devotees from as far as abroad.

The festival that defines Teggiano

In the heart of the Vallo di Diano, in the province of Salerno, the medieval village of Teggiano celebrates its patron saint, San Cono, every year at the beginning of June. This is not just a local festival for a town in Campania: San Cono is the patron of the entire Diocese of Teggiano-Policastro, and his devotion attracts faithful from all the towns of the Vallo di Diano and Cilento, as well as from emigrant communities who have carried his cult as far as Uruguay, Argentina, and the United States. Mayor Michele Di Candia has described it as "the beating heart of our identity," and visitors during these days immediately understand why: the entire town, from the squares to the balconies, transforms to welcome its Saint.

Who was San Cono

According to tradition, Cono was born in Diano—the ancient name of Teggiano, which later gave its name to the entire valley—towards the end of the 12th century. While still very young, he entered the Benedictine monastery of Santa Maria di Cadossa in Montesano sulla Marcellana, where he died at a young age in the early 13th century. After the monastery was abandoned, his relics were moved to Teggiano in 1261, and they have rested in the city's historic center ever since; official recognition of his cult came in 1871. The community attributes their survival during the earthquakes of 1857 and 1980 to the Saint's protection, an event commemorated every year on December 17th, while a pilgrimage to the Cadossa monastery takes place on the second Sunday of August.

The religious heart of the celebration

The liturgical calendar has remained largely unchanged over the years and sets the rhythm for the entire festival:

  • Solemn Vespers on the eve, presided over by a guest bishop, followed by the procession of the relic through the village streets.
  • Blessing of the fields in Piazza Portello, a gesture linking devotion to the agricultural calendar of the Vallo di Diano.
  • At midnight, the great bell and firecrackers announce the start of the solemnity.
  • On June 3rd, the Saint's day, Holy Masses in the Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore and the solemn Pontifical Mass in the late morning.
  • The grand procession with banners, confraternities, and authorities, with a stop at the Obelisk of San Cono and the mayor's floral tribute.
  • In the evening, the Vespertine Mass and the Supplication to San Cono.

Brass bands, illuminations, and square performances

The religious aspect is always accompanied by a rich secular program. Illuminations decorate the alleys, guest brass bands—in recent years the Gran Concerto Musicale Città di Francavilla Fontana and the Città Vallo di Diano band—offer concerts in the square with operatic and symphonic repertoires, and the festival concludes with a spectacular fireworks display in Piazza Portello, awaited by thousands. In recent years, the Scena Teatro festival, directed by Antonello De Rosa, has been added, bringing free evenings of itinerant theater, fire shows, singer-songwriter music, and folk dance to the historic center.

A village worth the trip

Teggiano rises over 600 meters above sea level on a hill overlooking the Vallo di Diano, with a medieval historic center made of staircases, stone portals, and churches, located within the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Until 1862, the town was called Diano; the current name derives from the ancient Roman name Tegianum. Coming for the patronal festival means seeing the village at its most vibrant, when the community—just under seven thousand inhabitants—doubles in size thanks to devotees, returning emigrants, and visitors from neighboring towns.

Tips for the best experience

  • Arrive on the eve: the vespers and the procession of the relic are the most intense and least crowded moments.
  • The pontifical mass on June 3rd fills the Cathedral: it is best to arrive well in advance.
  • Save the final evening for the fireworks, the most photographed moment of the festival.
  • Combine your visit with a walk through the village and a gastronomic stop: the Vallo di Diano is a land of beans, Caciocavallo Podolico cheese, and cured meats.

San Cono Festival — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the San Cono Patronal Festival took place in Teggiano from May 31 to June 3, featuring solemn vespers presided over by Bishop Pasquale Cascio, the Pontifical Mass by Bishop Antonio De Luca, the relic procession, and the blessing of the fields in Piazza Portello. Alongside the liturgy, four free evenings of the Scena Teatro festival directed by Antonello De Rosa, the Gran Concerto Musicale Città di Francavilla Fontana, and the final fireworks display.

In 2026, Teggiano celebrated its most cherished festival from May 31 to June 3, with a program that intertwined liturgy and community events as always. On the eve, solemn vespers presided over by Bishop Pasquale Cascio, the procession of the Saint's relic, and the blessing of the fields in Piazza Portello took place; at midnight, the great bell and firecrackers announced the start of the solemnity.

On June 3rd, the day of San Cono, Holy Masses in the Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore preceded the solemn Pontifical Mass at 10:45 AM, presided over by Bishop Antonio De Luca, bishop of Teggiano-Policastro, followed by the grand procession through the village streets with banners and authorities, including a stop at the Obelisk of San Cono for the floral tribute by Mayor Michele Di Candia.

On the secular side, the Scena Teatro festival enlivened the historic center with four free-entry evenings—from the itinerant journey "Raccontami" to the fire show, from the tribute to Domenico Modugno to folk dance—while the Gran Concerto Musicale Città di Francavilla Fontana and the fireworks display in Piazza Portello concluded the festivities.
