Torrice celebrates its patron saint with faith, music, art, and theater in the heart of Ciociaria
The San Bernardino Patronal Feast is the most cherished religious and civic event in Torrice, a village of about 4,300 inhabitants perched at an altitude of 321 meters, just seven kilometers from Frosinone. Every year on May 20th, the day the Church commemorates San Bernardino da Siena, the town gathers around its patron with a day that combines popular devotion, tradition, and cultural offerings. Alongside San Bernardino, Torrice also venerates co-patrons San Sebastiano and San Rocco, in a multi-faceted devotion typical of the villages in southern Lazio.
San Bernardino da Siena (1380-1444) was one of the leading figures of the Franciscan Observance and an extraordinary preacher in the vernacular, so much so that he is considered one of the fathers of 15th-century Italian prose. He is responsible for the spread throughout Italy of the trigram of Christ (IHS), the radiant monogram that still adorns facades and portals across half the peninsula today. The choice of this saint as protector reflects Torrice's ancient bond with Franciscan spirituality and popular preaching.
The heart of the festival remains the procession with the statue of San Bernardino, which winds through the streets of the historic center accompanied by the faithful, civil and religious authorities, and the brass band. Liturgical rites take place in the Church of San Lorenzo, the town's main sacred building, featuring a Baroque layout and housing significant works, including a canvas attributed to the Cavalier d'Arpino and two paintings that some scholars associate with the school of Giorgione.
In recent years, the municipal administration has enriched the traditional program with recreational and artistic events. The 2026 edition featured a brass band concert, a classical music concert with young violin, guitar, and piano performers, an art exhibition set up at the entrance of the Municipal Villa showcasing village scenes painted by students from the Bragaglia Institute of Frosinone, and an inclusive theatrical performance inspired by Kafka's "The Metamorphosis," staged in the Church of San Lorenzo. A formula that fosters dialogue between schools, the social sector, and the local community.
The Municipality of Torrice, in the province of Frosinone in the Lazio region, is a medieval village marked by a long history of invasions and transitions, from Barbarossa to the Angevins, and is the birthplace of Risorgimento figures like Nicola Fabrizi. A land of olive groves and agricultural tradition, Torrice is also known for abbuticchi, spiced lamb offal rolls in sauce, a signature dish of Ciociarian cuisine. The San Bernardino feast, historically accompanied by a renowned fair, is the ideal opportunity to discover the historic center, the castle, and the town's churches during one of the moments when the community shines brightest.
For the 2026 festivities, the municipal administration led by Mayor Alfonso Santangeli, with Councilor for Culture Celestina Arduini and parish priest Father Giacinto Mancini, complemented the procession with the statue of San Bernardino with a rich program of events. At the entrance of the Municipal Villa, an exhibition was set up featuring scenes of Torrice painted by students of the Bragaglia Institute of Frosinone, while in the Church of San Lorenzo, an inclusive theatrical performance inspired by Kafka's "The Metamorphosis" was staged, involving students from the Torrice middle school. Music played its part with the traditional brass band concert and a classical music concert featuring Maria Lisa Telera on violin, Flavia Maria Palazzi on guitar, and Marco Francesco Palazzi on piano. An edition that confirmed the festival's vocation to unite devotion, art, and community.
