About San Bernardino Festival

On the San Bernardino hill, one of the oldest parts of Lioni, the neighborhood gathers for its annual festival: an outdoor mass and procession in honor of the saint, followed by live music, children's games, and stalls serving the flavors of Irpinia. It is a simple, community-driven event, born from the residents' devotion and grown around the church rebuilt after the 1980 earthquake.

A neighborhood festival on the San Bernardino hill

In Lioni, in the upper Ofanto valley in the province of Avellino, the San Bernardino neighborhood comes to a standstill for a day, transforming into an open-air square. The San Bernardino Neighborhood Festival is not a large-scale regional event; it is a local celebration organized by residents with the support of local associations, blending popular devotion, conviviality, and Irpinian cuisine along the district's streets.

The San Bernardino hill is one of the oldest parts of the town: the « Vico di li liuni », one of the first settlements to emerge along the Ofanto river, developed right here, and the community took shape from that core. This is why the festival has a value that goes beyond mere entertainment: it is a way to reconnect with the neighborhood's memory and keep alive a local identity that was profoundly changed by the 1980 earthquake.

The religious moment: outdoor mass and procession

The day begins with the devotional part, dedicated to Saint Bernardino of Siena, whose liturgical feast falls on May 20th and has always been one of the most heartfelt dates in the Lioni religious calendar, alongside those of the Annunziata (March 25th), the Madonna del Carmine (July 16th), and the patron saint, Saint Roch (August 16th).

  • Outdoor Eucharistic celebration in honor of the saint, with moments of communal prayer;
  • Procession through the neighborhood streets, accompanied by the faithful and groups in traditional attire;
  • Decorations and displays along the route, curated by the residents of the district themselves.

The Church of San Bernardino, a symbol of reconstruction

The neighborhood's landmark is the Church of San Bernardino, rebuilt between 1995 and 1996 on the site where an ancient 17th-century chapel, destroyed by the 1980 earthquake, once stood. Designed by local architect Angelo Verderosa, it features a circular plan that evokes the Christian sense of community, and a central tower inspired by rural dovecotes; brick, wood, and local stone define its character. Inside, it houses the wooden statue of the saint, a work by the sculptor Avallone from 1874, an early 20th-century marble tabernacle, and an 1836 bell with an inscription dedicated to the faithful of San Bernardino. For the inhabitants, rebuilding that church also meant restoring a center to a peripheral neighborhood: the festival is its natural continuation.

Music, flavors, and games: afternoon and evening

After the liturgical part, the festival changes pace. The afternoon and evening are the most lively moments, with live music provided by local bands and folk artists, and neighborhood gastronomy occupying the outdoor spaces.

  • Stalls with typical Irpinian dishes, artisanal sweets, sandwiches, pizza, and draft beer;
  • Traditional games for children, face painting, and creative workshops;
  • Charity raffle, lottery, and sports tournaments organized within the district;
  • Social moments designed for all ages, from the little ones to the neighborhood's elderly.

Lioni and Upper Irpinia

Lioni has just over six thousand inhabitants and is located at an altitude of about 550 meters, some fifty kilometers from Avellino, in a green countryside crossed by the streams that feed the Ofanto. From an agricultural and artisanal village, it has become, after 1980, one of the main commercial hubs of Upper Irpinia, in Campania. Those who arrive for the festival can easily extend their visit to the rest of the area: the villages of Upper Irpinia, the Aglianico vineyards, and the historic Avellino–Rocchetta Sant'Antonio railway line, traveled by the tourist trains of the Irpinia Express.

When it takes place

The festival is traditionally held in May, close to the feast of Saint Bernardino of Siena: the 2025 edition took place on May 31st. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced: it is advisable to follow the channels of the Municipality of Lioni and the communications of the parish and the neighborhood in the preceding weeks.
