The San Bartolomeo Festival is the most anticipated event of the year in Morsasco, a small village perched among the hills of the Ovada Monferrato, halfway between Ovada and Acqui Terme, in the province of Alessandria. Every late August, the community gathers around its patron saint for five days of solemn and joyful celebrations, following a tradition deeply rooted in the life of the village.

San Bartolomeo, one of the twelve apostles, is the protector of Morsasco and gives his name to the village's parish church, a 16th-century single-nave building embellished with the famous frescoes by Pietro Ivaldi, known as "il Muto". The saint's liturgical feast falls on August 24th, the culminating day of the festivities, when popular devotion is expressed through the traditional procession and religious services that bring the streets of the historic center to life.

Five days of community

More than just a single event, the San Bartolomeo Festival is a series of days that alternate between the spiritual and the social. The setting is the evocative medieval village dominated by the Castle of Morsasco, a fortification mentioned as early as the 13th century that belonged over the centuries to the Del Bosco, Malaspina, Lodron, Gonzaga, Centurione Scotto, and Pallavicino families.
