The rustic patronal feast in the Oliastrello district of Ustica

The San Bartolicchio Festival is one of the most beloved traditions on the island of Ustica, located in the municipality of Ustica in the province of Palermo, Sicily. It is the rural and popular version of the festivities dedicated to Saint Bartholomew the Apostle, the island's patron saint: the affectionate name "Bartolicchio" reflects the familiar, rural, and folkloric character of this occasion, which is distinct from the more solemn patronal feast celebrated in the town center.
The festival is held on the second Sunday of September in the Oliastrello district, one of the rural areas of Ustica. The heart of the celebration is the delightful little church decorated with De Simone ceramics, overlooking the characteristic pond. During these days, the Ustica countryside comes alive with lights, sounds, and colors, becoming a stage for festivities, conviviality, and outdoor games.
Preparations begin nine days earlier with the traditional novena, held every evening at 9:00 PM with traditional songs and prayers. On the Saturday evening of the vigil, residents gather to organize a community dinner with music and dancing. On Sunday, the highlight of the festival, the procession begins in the late afternoon along the streets of the Oliastrello district, followed by Holy Mass.
The popular side of the festival is rich in convivial and entertainment moments: meat and sausage barbecues are organized, accompanied by fruit, wine, and music. Among the country games, the sack race, tug-of-war, and other outdoor activities stand out, which are particularly appreciated by children. The picturesque and amusing donkey race is a must-see, serving as the true folkloric attraction of the day. The evening continues with a tombolone (bingo) full of prizes and concludes at midnight with fireworks.
The San Bartolicchio Festival involves the entire island of Ustica and is a precious opportunity to bring families and friends together in the countryside homes, amidst food, fun, and tradition. For lovers of popular festivals and Sicilian folklore, it represents an authentic event, capable of preserving and passing on the rural and religious identity of this small Tyrrhenian island.
