About Samnites, Flavors and Stars

Samnites, Flavors and Stars is the summer festival hosted by the Municipality of Carife in Alta Irpinia, in partnership with the Archaeological Museum of the Baronia. Over two August evenings, the event weaves together Samnite archaeology, art, tastings of local Irpinian delicacies, live music, and stargazing between the museum halls and the Addolorata Necropolis. It is an intimate gathering designed to share the ancient history of the Baronia region under the clear, dark skies of the Ufita hills.

History, taste, and the night sky in Alta Irpinia

Samnites, Flavors and Stars is the summer festival organized by the Municipality of Carife, in the province of Avellino, in collaboration with the Archaeological Museum of the Baronia. The formula is simple yet effective: take the town's archaeological heritage—among the most significant in the entire inland Campania region—and present it to the public at night, when the Ufita hills cool down and the sky, far from city lights, becomes crystal clear.

This is not a large-scale festival or a traditional food fair; it is a cultural event tailored to the village, where guided tours, a glass of Irpinian wine, live music, and a telescope pointed at the constellations are all part of the same evening. Visitors to Carife during these nights will find a town of just over a thousand residents opening its museum, archaeological sites, and wine cellars to the public.

The Archaeological Museum, the heart of the festival

The Carife museum is the starting point. Housed on Via Stefano Melina, it preserves the grave goods recovered from local necropolises, dating from the 6th to the 3rd century BC, and tells the story of the Irpinian Samnites who inhabited these valleys before the Roman conquest. The exhibition is divided into three rooms:

  • The first is dedicated to artifacts from the Castel Baronia necropolis;
  • The second features grave goods from the two Carife necropolises of Piano la Sala and Addolorata;
  • The third is educational, featuring a 1:1 scale reconstruction of a chamber tomb from the Addolorata archaeological site.

Ceramics, weapons, bronze and silver ornaments, tools, and personal items: approximately two hundred grave goods that form one of the most complete accounts of the pre-Roman Irpinian world.

The Addolorata Necropolis under the stars

The second hub of the festival is the Addolorata Necropolis, discovered in 1982 near the church of the same name. It consists of about twenty tombs spread over an area of approximately 750 square meters, mostly dating back to the 3rd century BC. The evening visit to the site is one of the most evocative moments of the program, allowing guests to walk among the Samnite burials at sunset, when the grazing light makes the structures visible and the Baronia landscape opens up toward the Daunia mountains.

The flavors of Irpinia

The food and wine component is not just an accompaniment: tastings of typical Irpinian products are featured every evening. Carife is part of the Cities of Oil network and is located in an area renowned for great wines—Irpinia is the land of Taurasi, Fiano di Avellino, and Greco di Tufo—as well as resilient farming traditions: extra virgin olive oil, pasture-raised cheeses, cured meats, bread, and preserves from the Baronia. Tasting these products becomes another way to tell the story of the continuity between the ancient territory and the present day.

Art and live music

Completing the picture are the artistic and musical offerings hosted within the museum spaces: art exhibition openings featuring Irpinian artists, instrumental performances, and intimate concerts designed for the small audience of a courtyard or exhibition hall. The program changes from year to year, pairing the archaeological narrative with a contemporary language.

Carife, the village and the Baronia

Carife sits at an altitude of about 740 meters, overlooking the Ufita Valley in the Baronia area of Alta Irpinia. The municipal territory was inhabited by Samnite populations, as evidenced by the necropolises excavated since the 1980s, making it a key archaeological center in the province of Avellino. The 1732 earthquake deeply marked the village: the mother church of San Giovanni Battista was rebuilt and now features Baroque forms, while traces of the ducal palace and the ancient Franciscan convent remain.

For those visiting Alta Irpinia, Carife is a stop that pairs well with the nearby villages of the Baronia, the natural areas of the Ufita, and the other museums of the provincial archaeological circuit.

When it takes place

The festival is held in August over two distinct evenings, generally close to the night of San Lorenzo—a period chosen specifically for the astronomical aspect of the initiative. The calendar and detailed program are announced by the Municipality of Carife and the Archaeological Museum in the weeks preceding the event.
