About Salitto Nativity

Every winter, the stone alleys of the Borgo Antico Porta, in the Salitto district of Olevano sul Tusciano, transform into a Bethlehem of the year zero. The Living Nativity, organized by the ASD AICS Olevano, stages the Nativity with around 200 performers of all ages and about thirty stations set up in homes, cellars, and workshops throughout the village: an oil mill, grape crushing, potters, basket weavers, and tasting points featuring local products from the province of Salerno. The most anticipated moment is the arrival of Joseph and Mary at the 15th-century chapel of San Rocco.

The living nativity of Borgo Antico Porta

In the Salitto district of Olevano sul Tusciano, in the province of Salerno, the historic core of the Borgo Antico Porta transforms into a Bethlehem of the year zero. Stone alleys, arches, stairways, and courtyards become the natural backdrop for a Nativity scene that involves the entire community: the residents themselves open up their homes, cellars, and garages, clearing them out and refurnishing them with period furniture and tools. The result is a journey where the village doesn't just serve as a backdrop, but becomes the scene itself.

Around 200 performers of all ages

The Salitto Living Nativity features around 200 performers, from the village's newborns—one of whom is chosen each year to play the Baby Jesus—to the village elders, all in costume. This is the most recognizable characteristic of the event: not professional actors, but an entire community bringing to life the crafts and daily gestures of their grandparents. This choral dimension explains why the performance has become one of the most popular Christmas events in the Picentini mountains.

Thirty stations of ancient crafts and flavors

The route winds through about thirty indoor and outdoor stations, each with its own story to tell. Visitors walk slowly from one setting to the next, rediscovering the scents, sounds, and flavors of the past:

  • the oil mill, with the processing and production of olive oil;
  • the grape crushing and the village cellar;
  • potters at work and basket weavers braiding wicker;
  • artisan workshops and ancient farming trades;
  • tasting points, with fried treats, cheeses, cured meats, polenta, focaccia, and local wine.

The procession, the chapel of San Rocco, and the Three Wise Men

The evening begins with the arrival of Joseph and Mary, who travel through the village on a donkey to the chapel of San Rocco, a 15th-century building that serves as the Nativity hut for the occasion. The historical pageant, Holy Mass, and the blessing set the rhythm of the performance, while every hour the Three Wise Men reach the hut to bring their gifts. The closing of the nativity, with the farewell of the performers, is the most emotional moment of the evening.

From Father Enrico Franchetti to the AICS Olevano

The Salitto living nativity was founded by Father Enrico Franchetti and, after seven years of performances, was suspended. In 2009, the AICS Olevano association resumed its organization and production, setting it more rigorously in the era of Christ's birth, with the Bethlehem of the year zero as the backdrop. In December 2025, the 20th edition took place, confirming the event as one of the longest-running in the region.

Olevano sul Tusciano, between the Grotta di San Michele and the Picentini mountains

The municipality of Olevano sul Tusciano, in Campania, is best known for the Grotta di San Michele Arcangelo, on the western slope of Monte Raione: a religious complex from the early Middle Ages, featuring Lombard-era frescoes, which was included by the World Monuments Fund in 1996 among the one hundred monuments in the world to be saved. One of the two access paths to the cave starts right from the Salitto district, placing it at the heart of an itinerary through faith, archaeology, and nature. Visiting the living nativity therefore also means discovering a lesser-known corner of the province of Salerno, just a few kilometers from the Piana del Sele.

Why it's worth the trip

The Salitto Living Nativity is not a show built for the public, but a tradition that the village renews for itself, which is precisely why it retains a rare authenticity. Those who arrive in the evening find the village illuminated by torches, doors open, the scent of fried food in the air, and hundreds of people in costume: an experience that combines devotion, rural memory, and typically Campanian conviviality.
