The Messina preview of the narrative documentary festival directed by Giovanna Taviani
Every year, before reaching the Aeolian island of Salina, the SalinaDocFest — a renowned international narrative documentary festival created and directed by filmmaker Giovanna Taviani — makes a stop in Messina for a city preview. This well-established event brings two days of cinema, discussions, and culture to the heart of the Strait's capital, building anticipation for the main festival held in the Aeolian archipelago.
The Messina preview is much more than a simple presentation: it is a full-fledged miniature festival, featuring screenings of documentaries and films, dialogues with directors, actors, and journalists, book presentations, and a university masterclass. The highlight is the presentation of the SDF Fondazione Messina for Culture Award, a recognition given to a prominent figure in Italian cinema. Over the years, the award has celebrated nationally acclaimed performers and authors, welcomed by the Messina audience within the halls of the Cinema Lux and the spaces of the University of Messina.
The preview stems from the collaboration between the festival, the Fondazione Messina per la Cultura, the Municipality of Messina, and the Metropolitan City of Messina. The connection to the local area is strong: the masterclass is held at the university's DAMS department, engaging students in a direct dialogue with the guests. In this way, the event intertwines the urban dimension of Messina with the island spirit of Salina, ideally stitching the Strait and the Aeolian sea together through the lens of documentary filmmaking.
SalinaDocFest is considered one of the leading Sicilian festivals dedicated to narrative documentary, telling the story of the present through non-fiction cinema in every edition. The preview in Messina, in the province of the same name and in the heart of north-eastern Sicily, serves as the gateway to this journey: an opportunity for the public to engage with the festival without traveling to the island, and for the city to assert its cultural vocation.
The twentieth edition of the SalinaDocFest, directed by Giovanna Taviani, was inaugurated in Messina with a two-day preview on June 18 and 19, 2026, dedicated to director Matteo Garrone. The event anticipated the main festival, scheduled in Salina from July 8 to 12, 2026, on the theme of "Odysseys" — ancient and contemporary journeys, sea crossings, and the migration of peoples.
At the heart of the preview was the presentation of the SDF Fondazione Messina for Culture Award to Matteo Garrone and the screening of his film "Io Capitano", an Oscar-nominated work that recounts the journey of Seydou and Moussa from Africa to Europe, in perfect harmony with the festival's theme.
The preview takes place in Messina, primarily at the Cinema Lux (and occasionally at the Cinema Apollo) and at the DAMS department of the University of Messina for the masterclass.
Messina is accessible by train (Messina Centrale station), by car via the A20 (Messina–Palermo) and A18 (Messina–Catania) motorways, and by ferry from Calabria across the Strait. The festival venues are located in the city centre and are well-served by public transport.
The preview events are designed as cultural gatherings open to the city. For details on reservations and seat availability, please consult the official SalinaDocFest website and the channels of the Fondazione Messina per la Cultura.
