About Saints Cosmas and Damian

At the end of September, Prignano Cilento renews its devotion to the Physician Saints Cosmas and Damian, the two brothers who, according to tradition, healed the sick without asking for payment. Around the small church dedicated to them, reopened in 2016 after years of silence, religious celebrations return, drawing pilgrims from the towns of the Calore Valley and the Cilento region. The festivities then move to the square and the local districts, where the evening concludes with live music from a cover band: this is how the village bids farewell to summer.

An ancient devotion brought back to life

The Saints Cosmas and Damian Festival is the event with which, at the end of September, the Municipality of Prignano Cilento, in the province of Salerno, renews its bond with the two physician saints venerated for centuries in this corner of Campania. The small church named after Saints Cosmas and Damian, located within the town's cemetery area, had remained closed for a long time: its reopening in 2016 brought back to life rites and customs that seemed destined to fade away. Since then, the anniversary has once again become a reference point for the faithful of the area, and not just for those from Prignano.

Who were the Physician Saints

According to tradition, Cosmas and Damian were two brothers born in Arabia who practiced medicine without ever asking their patients for money: for this reason, they are remembered as the anargyroi, meaning ยซwithout silverยป. Their martyrdom is placed in the era of Emperor Diocletian, around 303 AD, near Antioch in Syria. The Church celebrates them on September 26th, and it is precisely around that date that the Cilento festivities are concentrated. In Cilento, however, their cult does not only concern Prignano: in Castel San Lorenzo, in the Calore Valley, there is also a church dedicated to them.

Pilgrims from the Calore Valley

On September 26th and 27th, the church in Prignano Cilento becomes a place of pilgrimage. Faithful arrive from various municipalities in the province of Salerno and from the towns of the Calore Valley: some come to pray, some to fulfill a vow, and others simply to gather in the place where their grandparents used to bring the sick from their families. It is a local pilgrimage, made of familiar faces and gestures repeated year after year, which perfectly captures the essence of Cilento's patronal festivals: moments when a scattered community โ€” including emigrants returning to the village โ€” reunites around a sanctuary and its history.

Faith and celebration: the two souls of the day

As in all festivals in Cilento, the program alternates between the liturgical and the popular. The day opens with religious celebrations in honor of the Physician Saints and closes, as evening falls, with music and entertainment in the village streets. In 2025, the festival took place on September 27th and concluded with a concert by a cover band that performed well-known songs, with the audience spread between the square and the districts.

  • Religious celebrations in the church of Saints Cosmas and Damian, the heart of the event;
  • Welcoming of pilgrims arriving from neighboring municipalities and the Calore Valley;
  • Widespread festivities between the town square and the districts, organized by local associations and committees;
  • Live music to close the evening, with bands performing great Italian and international hits.

The last festival of the Prignano summer

Saints Cosmas and Damian ideally closes the town's summer calendar, which in 2025 featured many popular events: Forni in Festa in the San Giuseppe district, featuring Cilento pizza and stuffed eggplant; the outdoor theater in early August; the Our Lady of Good Counsel Festival on August 11th, with the traditional procession and the cente (votive candles); Fritti in Festa; and La Corrida sotto le Stelle at the end of August. Arriving in September means rediscovering, in the festival of the Physician Saints, the most intimate and devotional part of a long and well-attended summer.

Prignano Cilento, a village of oil within the Park

Prignano Cilento is a small municipality of just over a thousand inhabitants, about eight kilometers from the sea, in the heart of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. The landscape is defined by centuries-old olive groves and Mediterranean scrub, with the dam on the Alento river and its artificial lake closing the horizon. The territory includes the hamlets of Melito, with its ancient village and medieval tower, and San Giuliano. In the historic center, one can visit the 13th-century church of San Nicola di Bari, with its Carrara marble altars, and the church of Sant'Antonio da Padova, part of an ancient Augustinian convent. The most iconic festival remains that of the patron saint, San Nicola, on Easter Monday, with the performance of the Opera ri Turchi.

When it takes place

The festival follows the liturgical memory of Saints Cosmas and Damian and traditionally falls on September 26th and 27th. The dates and program for each edition are announced a few weeks in advance through the channels of the Municipality of Prignano Cilento, the Pro Loco, and the parish: it is advisable to check them before traveling.

Saints Cosmas and Damian โ€” edition 2026

In 2026, Prignano Cilento will once again celebrate the Physician Saints Cosmas and Damian in the church dedicated to them, a pilgrimage destination for the faithful of the province of Salerno and the Calore Valley. As of the publication date of this entry, the Municipality, the Pro Loco, and the parish have not yet released the official calendar: the festival is expected, as per tradition, around the liturgical memorial of September 26th. The program will be updated as soon as it is made public.

An edition yet to be announced

Official dates for the Saints Cosmas and Damian Festival in Prignano Cilento have not yet been published for 2026. The anniversary usually follows the liturgical memorial of the two physician saints, set for September 26th, and in Cilento, the festivities are concentrated between the 26th and 27th of the month: it is reasonable to expect the same period, but confirmation rests with the organizers.

What to expect

The structure of the festival is well-established: religious celebrations in the church of Saints Cosmas and Damian, reopened in 2016 after years of closure, welcoming pilgrims arriving from neighboring municipalities and the Calore Valley, followed by the secular part in the square and the village districts, with live music to close the evening. All this in one of the small communities of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, in the province of Salerno.

Where to follow updates

Definitive information is released a few weeks in advance through the website of the Municipality of Prignano Cilento, the social media channels of the Pro Loco, and parish notices. Those planning a trip to Campania for the end of September should check dates and times before departure.
