The masked parade with the Little Mayor
The Little Carnival is the most anticipated event of the carnival in Saint-Vincent, a renowned spa town in the province of Aosta. It is a grand parade of masks and costumed groups that crosses the historic centre amidst music, colours, and entertainment, in a festive atmosphere designed especially for families and children. The event involves local schools and associations, transforming the town's streets into a large open-air stage.
The most characteristic symbolic moment is the investiture of the Little Mayor and his council: a tradition where elementary school children symbolically "govern" the municipality of Saint-Vincent for the carnival day. A ritual that combines play and civic sense, entrusting the keys of the town to the younger generation for a day and renewing an affectionate bond between the community and its new generations.
Although dedicated to children, the Little Carnival also manages to involve adult audiences, thanks to the cheerful and participatory atmosphere that enlivens the centre of Saint-Vincent. The parade, with its variety of costumes and masked groups, is one of the most cherished moments of the Aosta Valley winter and is part of the rich calendar of carnivals in the Aosta Valley Region.
