Who was Saint Vincent Ferrer

Vincent Ferrer, born in Valencia in 1350 and died in Vannes, Brittany, on April 5, 1419, was a Dominican preacher who played a key role in resolving the Great Western Schism. Canonized by Pope Callixtus III in 1455, he is revered as one of the Catholic Church's most famous miracle workers. His cult spread extensively throughout Southern Italy, where numerous towns chose him as their patron or co-patron. In Cilento, devotion to the Valencian saint is deeply rooted: besides Vibonati, he is also the patron saint of Camerota.

The Vibonati festival calendar

The Municipality of Vibonati officially lists a series of religious observances throughout the year, each accompanied by its own fair or civil celebrations:

• Saint Anthony Abbot — January 17, with a fair on January 16 in Vibonati;
• Saint Mary of Portosalvo — first Sunday of June, in Villammare;
• Saint John the Baptist — June 23, with a fair on June 24 in Villammare;
• Saint Vincent Ferrer — late August;
• Saint Lucy — December 13, with a fair in the S. Lucia area.

The Saint Vincent Ferrer Festival is the last major summer event in Vibonati before the town returns to its usual rhythm and the cultural season concludes in September with the Villammare Film Festival.

How the festival unfolds

As with most patronal feasts in Cilento, the program alternates between liturgical and civil events. The former includes church celebrations and a procession with the saint's statue through the village streets; the latter features open-air music, street lighting, and market stalls. In 2025, the civil program featured a musical show dedicated to Southern Italian traditions, hosted in the open-air space of the S. Gerbaso parking area.

Vibonati and Villammare: between hills and sea

Vibonati is a hillside village overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, while the hamlet of Villammare serves as its coastal gateway, complete with a promenade and a small harbor.
