The patronal feast of Piazza Ernesto Cesaro, featuring a solemn novena and the Sandwich Festival

In Torre Annunziata, within the metropolitan city of Naples, the arrival of autumn marks one of the most cherished traditions of the Terravecchia district: the Saint Teresa Festival, centered around the church of the same name overlooking Piazza Ernesto Cesaro. For about ten days, the square and the parish become the heart of neighborhood life, with a calendar that weaves together liturgy, culture, and popular festivities. The celebrations are organized jointly by the parish communities of Saint Teresa and the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which have shared the pastoral journey of this part of the city for years.
The Church of Saint Teresa of Jesus was built in 1639 by the Piccolomini family, feudal lords of Terravecchia, on an area marked by the 1631 lava flow. It was donated to the Discalced Carmelites on April 3, 1645, who dedicated it to Saint Teresa of Ávila. It later passed to the Olivetans and, around the mid-19th century, to the Franciscans, while the adjacent convent was converted into a hospital following post-unification suppressions. The building became a parish only in 1964. Inside, the single nave is defined by Corinthian columns, and the apse preserves a 17th-century altarpiece depicting the Spanish saint. The square where it stands, also known as Piazza Santa Teresa, has been named after the mathematician Ernesto Cesaro since 1911.
The religious heart of the festival is the preparatory novena, which begins in early October: each evening, a Eucharistic celebration is presided over by a different priest, with meditations dedicated to Teresian spirituality. Alongside the liturgical path, there are events that go beyond simple devotion: a prayer vigil with vocational testimonies and a cultural meeting on the cult of Saint Teresa in Naples, designed for those who wish to understand how the figure of the mystic from Ávila became part of the popular religious life of Campania.
On October 15th, the saint's liturgical day, the morning begins with confessions and Eucharistic adoration, continues with the rosary and mass, and culminates in the evening with the solemn concelebration, the most anticipated moment of the entire calendar. In 2025, it was presided over by Cardinal Domenico Battaglia, Archbishop of Naples, who also performed the canonical installation of the parish priest, Father Domenico Panariello.
Alongside the religious celebrations, the event has its secular and convivial side in the Sandwich Festival — also known as the "Panino Festival" — an evening when Piazza Ernesto Cesaro fills with tables, lights, and music. It is the moment when the festival leaves the church and becomes a shared experience for everyone: families, local youth, and the elderly who remember the editions from thirty years ago. In 2025, the evening featured dance performances by the Lady Carol school and live music by the group La Paranza, with that repertoire of Neapolitan folk music that needs no introduction in Torre Annunziata.
The festival is also a great opportunity to discover a city in Campania often skipped by those rushing toward Pompeii and Sorrento. Torre Annunziata houses the archaeological site of Oplontis, with the famous Villa of Poppaea inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list, and a long tradition linked to pasta making, which in the 19th century made the city one of the Italian capitals of dried pasta. Behind it rises Mount Vesuvius, and in front lies the gulf: a setting that gives the October evenings in the square a special light, with the sea just a few hundred meters away and the Lattari Mountains on the horizon.
Visitors from outside will find a parish festival in the truest sense of the term: no scenery built for an external audience, but a community coming together. This is perhaps its greatest value for those curious about the popular traditions of Campania.
As of the update of this page, no official calendar has been published for the 2026 festivities in honor of Saint Teresa in Torre Annunziata. However, the event is firmly linked to October 15th, the liturgical memorial of Saint Teresa of Ávila: it is around this date that the novena, evening celebrations, and festive moments in Piazza Ernesto Cesaro have been organized in previous years.
As soon as the parish releases the program — usually towards the end of September — this page will be updated with confirmed dates, times, and events, including any new edition of the Sandwich Festival.
