The patron saint festival of Telese Terme, held in the last week of June, featuring a solemn procession, town square concerts, and community celebrations.
In the heart of the Telesina Valley, in the Province of Benevento, the town of Telese Terme dedicates its most cherished event of the year to its patron saint, Saint Stephen. The Saint Stephen Patronal Festival is traditionally celebrated in the last week of June, transforming the small Campania spa town into a vibrant meeting place for several days: church services, street processions, concerts in the square, and families staying out late into the night.
The festivities extend beyond the final weekend. The Saint Stephen Parish, led by Father Giammaria Cipollone, organizes a preparatory path each year marked by thematic days: youth day, family day, a day for the elderly and the vulnerable, a Eucharistic day, a thanksgiving day—including a mass for recent graduates—and a day for children and teenagers. Each evening features a different celebration, often outdoors, involving different segments of the community.
The most anticipated moment remains Sunday: morning masses, followed by the solemn late-afternoon celebration and the procession with the statue of the protomartyr carried through the town center, accompanied by a marching band and popular participation that grows year after year.
Alongside the religious program runs the secular one, managed by the festival committee. The natural stage is Piazza Unità d'Italia, complemented by the Market Area for events attracting larger crowds. Over the years, the stage has hosted names from the Neapolitan music scene and television comedy, folk percussion groups, and family shows, all with free admission.
In May 2026, the parish introduced a new Patronal Festival Committee, coordinated by Fausto Bonelli and composed of twenty-five people of different generations and professions: long-time devotees of the saint, young people, families, and professionals. Mayor Giovanni Caporaso also actively participates in meetings, describing the festival as a significant moment for all of Telese Terme and an opportunity for community gathering. The organizers' stated goal is to create an event capable of involving everyone, believers and non-believers alike: a people's festival before it is even a calendar of events.
Visitors arriving for the festivities will find a town worth exploring during the day. Telese Terme owes its name to the sulfurous springs that flow in the Calore River valley and the thermal establishments built starting in 1883, which made the town one of the historic spa destinations of inland Campania; just outside the town lies Lake Telese, a regular stop for the statue of the patron saint during the festival days. All around, the Telesina Valley is a land of Aglianico and Falanghina del Sannio vineyards, with villages like Cerreto Sannita and Guardia Sanframondi, and the massive Matese massif closing the horizon.
The Saint Stephen Patronal Festival is the best way to understand how a patronal feast is experienced in the Sannio region: no choreography built for tourism, but a community that recognizes itself in its own rites, fills the square, and naturally welcomes those arriving from outside. Everything, from liturgies to concerts, is free of charge: you just need to be there.
The 2026 Saint Stephen Patronal Festival brought Telese Terme into the heart of its most intense week between Friday, June 26, and Sunday, June 28. The approach had begun the previous May with the presentation of the new Patronal Festival Committee, coordinated by Fausto Bonelli and composed of twenty-five volunteers of different generations, supported by the parish priest Father Giammaria Cipollone and Mayor Giovanni Caporaso.
The festival evenings followed the established pattern of thematic days: Friday, the 7:00 PM holy mass on the Day of the Elderly and the Vulnerable; Saturday, the 7:00 PM celebration dedicated to families, hosted directly in Piazza Unità d'Italia. The culmination arrived on Sunday the 28th with the solemn 6:30 PM mass, followed by the highly anticipated and well-attended procession with the statue of the patron saint through the city streets.
The secular program alternated between popular tradition and entertainment. Friday evening, at 9:00 PM, the square filled up for I Bottari and their percussion. On Saturday, the event moved to the Market Area, where at 9:30 PM the music of Selma paved the way for the comedy of Mariano Bruno, a beloved face from Made in Sud. The closing, Sunday at 9:30 PM, was entrusted to the concert of Andrea Sannino, for a perfect Neapolitan-style finale.
Religious celebrations are held at the Church of Saint Stephen and through the streets of the center of Telese Terme (BN). Secular program events are concentrated in Piazza Unità d'Italia and the Market Area.
By car, Telese Terme is served by the Telesina state road (SS 372), which connects Benevento to the junction with the A1 motorway. By train, the town has the Telese-Cerreto Sannita station. The nearest airport is Naples-Capodichino.
Free admission to all celebrations, the procession, and the shows in the square. Only purchases at the stalls are paid.
During the days of the procession, traffic in the center is restricted: it is advisable to leave the car in peripheral parking areas and continue on foot. The detailed program is released by the parish and the festival committee in the weeks preceding the festival.
