The patron saint festival of Arnara in the Valle Latina
January 20th is the most anticipated date of the year in Arnara, a small village in the province of Frosinone, in the heart of the Valle Latina, Lazio. On this day, the community pays homage to its protector, Saint Sebastian, a Roman martyr venerated for centuries, with a festival that weaves together religious devotion, popular tradition, and music.
A Roman soldier and martyr for the Christian faith (Narbonne, 256 โ Rome, January 20, 288), Saint Sebastian is at the center of an ancient cult. In Arnara, his devotion is evidenced by the church dedicated to him, first mentioned in the Sacred Visit of Bishop Lanterni in 1629 and entirely rebuilt in 1731. This is where the festival begins every year.
The celebrations span two days. On the eve, January 19th, the morning opens with a solemn mass in the Church of Saint Sebastian, followed by a short procession that transfers the saint's statue to the Parish Church of Saint Nicholas, where another mass, animated by the parish choir, is celebrated in the evening.
On the day of the feast, January 20th, the highlight is the solemn morning procession which, after the mass in the Church of Saint Nicholas, winds through the town's central streets with the statue of the Patron Saint. It is accompanied by the parish choir and the Ceccano Musical Band, conducted by Maestro Bartolini.
One of the moments most cherished by the community is the blessing of the traditional San Sebastiano donuts, typical pastries that are blessed and distributed to all participants before the morning procession. A simple gesture that unites faith, conviviality, and local flavors.
The festival is not just about reflection. The multipurpose hall hosts performances by small orchestras and musical entertainment, while the day concludes with a fireworks display that illuminates the sky over the Ciociaria village.
Organized by the Municipality of Arnara, the Saint Sebastian festival is much more than a religious anniversary: it is a time for the entire community to come together, also attracting visitors from neighboring towns in the Ciociaria region. An authentic opportunity to discover the popular traditions of southern Lazio and the faith of a small village that gathers around its Saint every January.
