The patron saint festival of Racale, blending faith, brass bands, and illuminations in the heart of lower Salento
In the calendar of Racale, a small town in lower Salento in the province of Lecce, there is no event more anticipated than the Saint Sebastian Martyr Patronal Festival. For the entire local community, it is much more than a religious observance: it is a time when the whole town gathers around its patron saint, blending popular devotion, music, markets, and entertainment in a spirit of great participation.
Saint Sebastian is venerated in Racale as the patron who protected the town from epidemics, particularly the plague. His significance is so deeply rooted that he is celebrated twice a year: the winter liturgical feast on January 20th, and the grand outdoor festival in late spring—the most solemn and well-attended event, filling the squares with lights, brass bands, and crowds.
The religious heart of the festival is the solemn procession that winds through the town center, preceded by Holy Mass in Piazza San Sebastiano. The civil festivities are accompanied by the great brass bands of Salento and beyond, hosted in the traditional bandstand (cassa armonica). This genre of band concerts remains a vibrant cultural heritage in Southern Italy, deeply felt by enthusiasts.
The famous Salento luminarie—elaborate architectural light displays—transform the center of Racale into a nocturnal stage, making the atmosphere truly unmistakable. The festival becomes a meeting point for the entire town and for the many locals who return home for the occasion, as well as a draw for visitors from neighboring towns.
The Saint Sebastian Patronal Festival perfectly embodies the spirit of the great Puglian town festivals, where the sacred and the popular coexist naturally. Those visiting lower Salento during this time will find in Racale an authentic concentration of culture, tradition, and hospitality, far from the most beaten tourist paths of the coast.
The 2026 edition of the Saint Sebastian Martyr Patronal Festival in Racale confirmed the blend of sacred and popular elements that makes this event the most anticipated of the year. The religious aspect culminated in the Holy Mass and the solemn procession on May 30, while the evenings in Piazza San Sebastiano alternated between grand brass band concerts and popular musical shows.
The festivities opened on May 28 with the Spiritual Concert "The Greatest Love" for choir, organ, and trumpet, performed by the Choir of the Archdiocese of Otranto. The light displays were entrusted to the award-winning De Cagna company from Maglie, while the funfair and street market on Via Milano brought life to the festival throughout its duration.
Brass band concerts by the City of Racale (cond. Anna Ciaccia), City of Lecce (cond. Giovanni Pellegrino), and City of Taviano (cond. Daniele De Pascali) ensembles. Light displays by the De Cagna company of Maglie; fireworks by Maggio Party Event & Fireworks (Tuglie) and Pirotecnica Lieto Carmine (Visciano).
The center of the festivities is Piazza San Sebastiano in Racale (LE), with events spread throughout the historic center and along Via Milano (market, funfair, and fireworks).
Racale is located in lower Salento, about 45 km from Lecce. By car, it can be reached via the SS274 Gallipoli–Santa Maria di Leuca road. The nearest train station is served by Ferrovie del Sud Est; the main airports are Brindisi and Bari.
Religious events, brass band concerts, and performances in the square are free to attend. Funfair attractions and some market activities require payment.
The festivities are organized by the Saint Sebastian Festival Committee; the updated program is published on the official social media channels of the festival.
