The patronal feast of Maniace, featuring the Nuri rituals, the Fuitina, and the ancient devotion of the Nebrodi mountains
The Saint Sebastian Festival is the most significant religious and popular event in Maniace, a town in the Metropolitan City of Catania located at the foot of the Nebrodi mountains in Sicily. The cult of the martyr saint has its roots in 1937, when farmers from Tortorici who settled in Maniace wished to introduce the festival with the same customs and rites as their hometown. Since then, Saint Sebastian has been the town's patron saint, and his festival marks two fundamental moments of the year.
The devotion is expressed on two distinct occasions. On January 20th, in line with the liturgical calendar, the winter festival takes place, while on the Sunday following May 17th, the town experiences the so-called "May Festival," which is even more intense in its rituals and attendance. On both occasions, the celebrations revolve around the Church of Saint Sebastian the Martyr and the evocative Abbey of Santa Maria di Maniace, built next to the Nelson Castle.
The procession of the statue lasts for an entire octave, crossing all the districts of the municipal territory. For the community of Maniace, the Saint Sebastian Festival represents much more than a religious recurrence: it is a sign of an identity built around the historical "diaspora" between the Nebrodi mountains and kept alive, even today, with the same customs and rites of the past.
The 2026 Saint Sebastian Festival in Maniace respected the traditional double schedule. The January celebration, planned for January 19-20, was postponed to January 24-25 due to adverse weather conditions, preserving all its rituals: the "da Vara" procession of the eve with torches and ciaramedda, the blessing of the Voti and panuzzi, the offering of wax, and the Fuitina of the Nuri along the abbey aisles.
The May festival, the most heartfelt moment of the year, was celebrated on Sunday, May 24, 2026, with a solemn procession of the Saint's statue held at several intervals throughout the day, along the districts of the Nebrodi town.
Maniace is located on the slopes of the Nebrodi mountains, in the province of Catania. By car, it can be reached via the SS120, heading towards Bronte and Cesarò. The nearest train station is Bronte on the Ferrovia Circumetnea line; the reference airports are Catania-Fontanarossa and Comiso.
The festival is celebrated on January 20th and the Sunday following May 17th. Participation in the celebrations and processions is free and open to all.
For the May festival, which is more crowded, it is advisable to arrive in the morning and wear comfortable clothing to follow the processions through the districts.
