The Saint Sebastian Festival is the most significant event in the religious calendar of Cerreto Laziale, a medieval village perched at an altitude of about 520 meters in the Aniene Valley, in the province of Rome. Every year, around January 20th, the entire community gathers around its patron saint in a celebration that weaves together popular devotion, historical memory, and local identity.

Saint Sebastian, protector of the village

Saint Sebastian, a Christian martyr venerated since the early centuries, is the patron saint of Cerreto Laziale. His figure, traditionally invoked as a protector against epidemics and bodily ailments, has accompanied the life of the village for generations. The liturgical feast falls on January 20th; when the anniversary falls on a weekday, the most solemn festivities are often concentrated on the following Sunday to involve the entire population.

The Church of Saint Sebastian

The symbolic heart of the devotion is the Church of Saint Sebastian, built around 1571 and mentioned in documents as early as 1572. Originally built contra pestem (against the plague), just outside the ancient walls of the village, it houses a valuable cycle of 16th-century frescoes depicting saints traditionally invoked against diseases, as well as a wooden crucifix and a small Roman-era votive altar. The depictions of Saint Sebastian, both pierced by arrows and in the guise of a soldier, testify to the antiquity and depth of the local cult.

A medieval village in the Aniene Valley

Cerreto Laziale preserves the typical layout of medieval villages in Lazio: narrow alleys, stone staircases, and clustered houses climbing up the hill. In addition to the Church of Saint Sebastian, the village houses the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, dating back to the 13th century.
