On August 16th, Casalduni honors Saint Roch with a procession, live music, and the flavors of the Sannio region
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The feast in honor of Saint Roch is one of the most cherished summer events in Casalduni, a small town of about 1,500 residents in the Province of Benevento, nestled in the inland Sannio region of Campania. The village stretches across the slopes of Mount Cicco, on the right bank of the Tammaro River, about twenty kilometers from the provincial capital. It is a landscape of olive groves, vineyards, and pasturesโa bounty that is reflected on the festival tables through local olive oil, wine, and cheeses produced just steps from the town center.
The focal point of the celebration is the Church of Saint Roch, an 18th-century building that has been restored over time and houses the statue carried in the procession. Saint Roch, a pilgrim invoked as the protector of the sick and travelers, is one of the most beloved figures in Southern Italy. His feast day, August 16th, marks the ideal conclusion to the mid-summer festivities, just after Ferragosto, when the villages of the Sannio fill with emigrants and families returning home for the holidays.
The day begins with religious services in the church dedicated to the saint, organized by the local parish. The highlight is the solemn procession: the statue of Saint Roch is carried on shoulders through the village streets, accompanied by hymns, prayers, and the heartfelt participation of the community. This part of the festival preserves its devotional character most intact, offering a glimpse of how the religious calendar still shapes collective life in these small towns.
Alongside the religious rites, August 16th in Casalduni is a day of secular celebration designed for all ages. Traditional highlights include:
It is a village festival in the most authentic sense: no grand stages or tickets, just an entire community gathering in the streets, with food quality guaranteed by the local producers of the Tammaro Valley.
Visitors arriving for the August 16th celebrations can spend a few hours exploring the village. Beyond the Church of Saint Roch, Casalduni is home to the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, the Ducal Castle of medieval origin (now municipal property), and the 17th-century Torre di Racchi. The town also carries a somber historical memory: on August 14, 1861, Casalduni and neighboring Pontelandolfo were the site of a massacre during the suppression of post-unification brigandage, an event still commemorated today through local cultural initiatives and re-enactments.
A useful clarification: the official patronal calendar of the Municipality of Casalduni lists the Madonna del Carmelo as the patron saint, celebrated on July 16th. However, the feast of Saint Roch on August 16th remains one of the most attended events of the Casalduni summer, deeply rooted in the church and popular devotion to the saint.
For the 2026 edition, no official program has been published yet. The date indicated on our site is provisional and subject to verification. We recommend contacting the Municipality (tel. +39 0824 856224, Piazza Municipio 1) or the parish in the days leading up to Ferragosto, when local committees release flyers with schedules for masses, the procession, and performances.
No program has been published for the 2026 Saint Roch feast in Casalduni (Province of Benevento, Campania). The sources consulted list the 2025 edition as the last documented one, while for this year, dates are still being updated and the municipal portal does not indicate any scheduled events.
In the small towns of the Sannio, the program for patronal feasts is often released only one or two weeks in advance via posters displayed in the village and posts on the festival committee's social media channels. Those wishing to attend can contact the Municipality of Casalduni (Piazza Municipio 1, tel. +39 0824 856224) or the local parish to verify the schedules for masses, the procession, and evening performances.
We will update this entry as soon as the official dates and program for the 2026 edition become available.
By car: Casalduni is about 25 kilometers from Benevento, traveling up the Tammaro Valley toward Pontelandolfo. The town is also a short distance from the Telese Terme area and the Telesina Valley. During the festival, the historic center is partially closed to traffic for the procession; it is best to park along the access roads to the village.
By train: The most convenient station is Benevento, from which you must continue by car or via provincial bus services (limited service on holidays). By plane: The reference airport is Naples Capodichino.
Religious services, the procession, and performances in the square are free to attend; you only pay for what you consume at food stalls and markets.
The festival falls in mid-August: days are hot, but evenings in the hills can get chilly, so bring a light jacket. There are few accommodations in the town itself; you will find more options like agriturismo farm stays and B&Bs in neighboring towns (Pontelandolfo, Fragneto, Telese Terme). Before leaving, verify dates and times with the Municipality, as the 2026 program has not yet been released.
