The patronal feast of Castel San Pietro Romano, blending faith, tradition, and the flavors of the Prenestini Mountains

On June 29th, the feast day of Saints Peter and Paul, the small village of Castel San Pietro Romano gathers around its patron saint for the Saint Peter the Apostle Feast. This is more than just a religious observance; it is a day when the entire community comes together, winding through the narrow streets of the historic center and around the Church of Saint Peter the Apostle to renew a tradition passed down through generations. Church bells, solemn masses, and social gatherings mark the hours where the sacred and the secular blend naturally, as is common in many villages across the Lazio region.
Castel San Pietro Romano is one of the smallest and most charming towns in the Metropolitan City of Rome, perched on the Prenestini Mountains at an altitude of over 700 meters, just above Palestrina. From its panoramic vantage point, the view sweeps across the entire valley and, on clear days, reaches as far as Rome. The village, dominated by the ruins of the Colonna Fortress, retains an intimate and authentic atmosphere that, on the day of the patronal feast, comes alive with residents and visitors drawn by the occasion.
The spiritual heart of the day is the Church of Saint Peter the Apostle on Via Vittorio Veneto, where liturgical celebrations dedicated to the patron saint take place. Surrounding these religious functions is a program of events that gives the festival its popular character: tastings of local products, guided tours to discover the village and its historic corners, concerts, and the traditional tombolaโan unmissable event that brings together young and old. The festival is free to attend and offers an ideal opportunity to discover this lesser-known corner of Lazio.
Organized with the involvement of the Municipality of Castel San Pietro Romano and the local parish, the Saint Peter the Apostle Feast takes place every year to coincide with the solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul. It is one of those village festivals that captures the identity of a place better than any guidebook: an invitation to climb up to the village, breathe in its slow pace, and share a day of tradition in the heart of the Prenestini Mountains.
For 2026, Castel San Pietro Romano will once again celebrate its patron saint with the Saint Peter the Apostle Feast, coinciding with the solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul on June 29th. The festival maintains its traditional structure, featuring religious services at the Church of Saint Peter the Apostle and moments of conviviality in the Prenestini Mountains village. Specific details for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially released; for schedules and the updated program, it is best to contact the Municipality or the parish.
