The Saint Paul Patronal Feast is the defining event for the small village of Seclì, a town of just under two thousand inhabitants in the province of Lecce, in the heart of Salento. The celebration falls on January 25th, the day the Church commemorates the Conversion of Saint Paul the Apostle, and it represents the most heartfelt moment of the year for the local population.

A devotion dating back to 1711

Saint Paul became the protector of Seclì in 1711, when the mayor at the time, Vito Lazzari, officially requested his patronage from the bishop. Since then, devotion to the Apostle has been passed down from generation to generation, becoming an integral part of the village's collective memory. The feast is not merely a religious rite, but an occasion for the community to rediscover its roots and renew its bond with tradition.

Religious rites and procession

The heart of the day is liturgical and devotional. In the Mother Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, an ancient building with medieval foundations, solemn masses are held in honor of the Saint. In the afternoon, the statue of Saint Paul is carried in procession through the village streets, accompanied by the faithful and a brass band, which marks the parade with traditional marches. The procession's path through the narrow streets of the historic center, passing the Ducal Palace and the village churches, is one of the most evocative moments of the feast.
