When St. Patrick's Well lights up green
Few people know that Orvieto's most curious monument โ the famous St. Patrick's Well, a masterpiece of Renaissance engineering commissioned by Pope Clement VII and designed by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger โ owes its name to the legend of the patron saint of Ireland. It is from this connection that Orvieto's celebration of Saint Patrick's Day is born, which for four days intertwines local tradition and Irish culture in the heart of the Umbrian city.
During the event, St. Patrick's Well is illuminated in green, the symbolic colour of Ireland, and hosts an exhibition of Orvieto lace. The guided tours "Between history and legend", curated by Coop Culture, accompany visitors in discovering the history and myths linked to the monument.
At Palazzo Bisenzi, the exhibition "Meeting Ireland" is held, which dialogues between Italian and Irish lace and embroidery, with traditional clover-themed lace from various regions and demonstrations of Irish techniques. Completing the programme is the performance by the Gruppo Sbandieratori e Musici dei Quartieri of Orvieto, which brings the city's folklore to the square. A festival that, in the Municipality of Orvieto (Province of Terni), unites local identity and international scope.
The 2026 edition of Saint Patrick's Day in Orvieto took place from Saturday, March 14 to Tuesday, March 17, with St. Patrick's Well illuminated in green and an exhibition of Orvieto lace.
