The patronal feast of Novi Velia, in the heart of the Cilento region

In Novi Velia, a small town of just over two thousand inhabitants in the Province of Salerno, Campania, the Saint Nicholas of Bari Patronal Feast is the event that best illustrates the bond between a community and its village. The town, nestled at an altitude of 648 meters on a spur of Mount Gelbison in the heart of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, gathers around its patron saint for a day marked by religious rites and festivities that involve the entire citizenry, from the elderly to children.
Saint Nicholas of Bari, Bishop of Myra and protector of sailors, children, and the poor, is one of the most venerated figures in all of Southern Italy. In Novi Velia, devotion to him dates back to the Middle Ages: local sources recall that the Basilian monks, who were particularly attached to the Saint, built a chapel dedicated to him in the upper part of the town, and that one of the ancient gates of the village was named Porta San Nicola. The local calendar sets the festivities for December 6th, the liturgical day of the Saint, with a second celebration traditionally held on August 17th, when the town welcomes those who have emigrated and return for the summer.
The heart of the feast remains liturgical. In the morning, the community gathers for the solemn High Mass; afterwards, the statue of Saint Nicholas is carried in procession along the stone streets and alleys of the historic center, accompanied by the band, parish choirs, and praying faithful. It is the moment when the medieval village—with its arches, steep stairways, and panoramic views over the Badolato valley—becomes the natural stage for a rite that has been repeated for generations, without the need for added scenery.
Surrounding the devotional aspect are the events that make the day a true community celebration:
Falling at the beginning of December, the event often coincides with the lighting of the Christmas decorations: for many local families, this is the signal that the holiday season has officially begun.
The table is an integral part of the celebration. Novi Velia belongs to a territory that has made simplicity its gastronomic hallmark: the famous mozzarella nella mortella, wrapped in myrtle sprigs, mountain cheeses, extra virgin olive oil from the Cilento hills, cured meats, wood-fired bread, and homemade sweets based on figs, walnuts, and honey. During the feast, these products return to homes and squares, offered to relatives and visitors with a level of hospitality that remains an unwritten rule here.
Those who climb up to Novi Velia for the occasion will find a fascinating historic center, developed along the ridge and still legible in its medieval structure, with its three original gates, the Lombard tower at the highest point, the remains of the castle built in 1291 by Guglielmo Marzano, and the Celestines' Convent. The Church of Santa Maria dei Longobardi houses valuable works, including the 1540 polyptych by Giovan Filippo Criscuolo. Just above the town, on the summit of Mount Gelbison at 1,705 meters, lies the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Sacro Monte, the highest Marian sanctuary in Italy and a destination for pilgrimages since the 14th century: a summer destination that ideally completes the portrait of this village, one of the most evocative in the Cilento.
The feast is traditionally celebrated on December 6th, Saint Nicholas' Day. The 2025 edition took place on Saturday, December 6th. For 2026, the official dates and program have not yet been published: it is advisable to check the channels of the Municipality of Novi Velia and the parish in the weeks leading up to the event.
As of the writing of this page, the official dates and program for the 2026 Saint Nicholas of Bari Patronal Feast in Novi Velia, in the Province of Salerno, have not been published. The feast normally follows the liturgical calendar of the patron saint, set for December 6th, but confirmation rests with the Municipality and the parish, which usually distribute the poster in the weeks immediately preceding the event.
Based on past editions, one can expect a day divided between the solemn High Mass in the morning, the procession with the statue of Saint Nicholas along the stone streets of the historic center accompanied by the band and parish choirs, and an evening moment of celebration in the square, often coinciding with the lighting of the Christmas decorations. However, none of these appointments are to be considered confirmed until the official program is released.
Those wishing to attend are invited to check the institutional channels of the Municipality of Novi Velia and parish announcements before traveling.
Novi Velia is located about 3 km from Vallo della Lucania, along the road that climbs towards Mount Gelbison. By car: A2 del Mediterraneo motorway, Battipaglia exit, then SS18 heading south until the junction for Vallo della Lucania and the SP road to Novi Velia. By train: Vallo della Lucania-Castelnuovo station on the Salerno-Reggio Calabria line, then bus or taxi.
The historic center is made of narrow alleys and stairways: it is best to leave the car in the parking spaces at the entrance to the town and continue on foot.
Participation in religious rites, the procession, and the festivities in the squares is free of charge.
In December, at an altitude of 648 meters, temperatures can be cold: bring warm clothing and comfortable shoes for the stone paving. For updated times, it is best to contact the Municipality of Novi Velia or the parish.
