The patronal feast of the 'hanging village' of Tuscia, blending faith, folklore, and a porchetta festival
The Saint Michael the Archangel Festival is the most anticipated event of the year in Vitorchiano, the evocative hanging village of peperino stone perched on a rocky spur in the province of Viterbo, in the heart of the Lazio Tuscia. Every May, the town gathers around its patron saint with days of celebrations that combine spirituality, popular culture, gastronomy, and live entertainment. The festival is organized by the Saint Michael the Archangel Celebration Committee in collaboration with the Municipality of Vitorchiano, with the support of the parish, local associations, civil protection, and volunteers: a true organizational machine that involves the entire community.
The religious heart of the festival follows a well-established ritual. Celebrations open with the triduum of preparation in the days leading up to the main event, followed by the evocative evening torchlight procession that guides the faithful to the sanctuary. On Saturday afternoon, the traditional poggiata takes place—a collective climb to the sanctuary for vespers—while the Sunday morning solemn procession and mass at the sanctuary of Saint Michael the Archangel represent the highlight of the event. The festival is also marked by popular traditions, such as the firing of crackers and the San Michele donuts, typical local pastries made with oil, wine, and anise.
The sanctuary of Saint Michael the Archangel is reached via the Piagge, a green path starting from Porta Tiberina in the historic center that descends through the gorges beneath the cliff. Along the way, you will encounter the Valley of Sculptures, an open-air gallery of peperino works established in 2017 and enriched by international sculpture symposiums. Every year, ahead of the festival, the Municipality of Vitorchiano maintains the fences and the trail, ensuring pilgrims and visitors can reach the sanctuary safely.
Alongside religious rites, the festival is a great social occasion: food stalls and the porchetta festival bring the historic center to life throughout the celebrations, alongside lunches and dinners organized by the Committee. It is the best way to discover the authentic flavors of the Viterbo Tuscia in a genuine, popular setting.
Evenings are split between Piazza Umberto I and Piazza Roma, featuring concerts, dance orchestras, family shows, children's entertainment, and the traditional tombola (bingo). The grand finale is marked by a fireworks display that illuminates the Vitorchiano cliff. The performance of the Banda Fedeli di Vitorchiano, accompanied by majorette choreography, is also a must-see.
The 2026 edition proved how deeply rooted this festival is: despite bad weather forcing the postponement of some events, the community successfully rescheduled the band concert, bingo, and dinner for the following Sunday, confirming the spirit of an event that remains an authentic example of a patronal feast lived by the whole town in the Lazio Region.
From May 7 to 10, 2026, Vitorchiano celebrated its patron saint, Michael the Archangel, with the usual blend of faith and folklore: triduum of preparation, torchlight procession, climb to the sanctuary, and solemn Sunday procession, accompanied by food stalls and a porchetta festival in the historic center. Ahead of the festival, the Municipality had maintained the fences along the Piagge, the path leading to the sanctuary. However, rain affected some evenings: the Celebration Committee, chaired by Roberto Merlani, organized a recovery day on Sunday, May 17, with the Banda Fedeli di Vitorchiano concert and majorettes in Piazza Roma from 4:30 PM, followed by the tombola and a dinner in the square. The Municipality publicly thanked the committee, parish, associations, and volunteers for a festival that bad weather could not stop.
Vitorchiano is located in the province of Viterbo, about 10 km from the provincial capital. By car: A1 motorway, exit Orte, then take the Orte-Viterbo expressway and exit at Vitorchiano. By train: Viterbo station, then take the Cotral bus to Vitorchiano. Events take place in the historic center (Piazza Umberto I and Piazza Roma) and at the sanctuary of Saint Michael the Archangel, which can be reached on foot along the Piagge path from Porta Tiberina.
All events in the squares are free; food at the stalls and the porchetta festival is paid.
Wear comfortable shoes for the climb to the sanctuary and the village alleys; the festival is largely outdoors, so it is advisable to check the weather forecast for May.
