The patronal feast of L'Aquila

The Saint Maximus Patronal Feast is the most cherished annual event for the city of L'Aquila, the capital of the Abruzzo region and seat of the archdiocese of the same name. Every June 10th, the local community pays homage to San Massimo d'Aveia, a martyr venerated as the primary patron of the city and the entire metropolitan archdiocese. The celebrations, promoted by the Archdiocese of L'Aquila in collaboration with the Municipality, span several days—typically from June 8th to 11th—and involve the entire historic center.

San Massimo d'Aveia, ancient roots

The cult of Saint Maximus has its origins in the history of ancient Aveia, a Roman center in the Vestini area, from which the devotion later moved to L'Aquila. The saint is the co-titular, along with Saint George, of the Cathedral of Saints Maximus and George in Piazza Duomo, the religious heart of the city. His figure represents a foundational element of L'Aquila's identity, so much so that the patronal feast has marked the city's civil and religious calendar for centuries.

The program of celebrations

The liturgical heart of the feast is concentrated on June 10th. The eve opens with the Vigil Mass, celebrated in the evocative Church of Santa Maria del Suffragio (Church of the Holy Souls) in Piazza Duomo. The day of the solemnity includes:

• the morning Capitular Mass, presided over by the canons of the Metropolitan Chapter and accompanied by the Schola Cantorum;
• the solemn evening Stational Mass, presided over by the Metropolitan Archbishop of L'Aquila and concelebrated by the diocesan priests, featuring the "San Massimo" Diocesan Choir;
• the procession of the Patron Saint through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by the "Città di Paganica" Band and the "Città di L'Aquila" Flag-wavers Group.

The celebrations are complemented by the choral festival "A song for Saint Maximus," a musical event dedicated to the patron saint.

The historic Saint Maximus Fair

The religious dimension is joined by the popular and commercial one with the Saint Maximus Fair, one of the oldest and most anticipated market events in the city. Organized by FIVA Confcommercio with the municipal administration, the fair attracts dozens of exhibitors from Abruzzo, Marche, Puglia, Molise, and Lazio, featuring stalls with handicrafts, clothing, household goods, footwear, gift items, sweets, and street food. After a seventeen-year absence due to the 2009 earthquake, the fair returned to the historic center, between Piazza Duomo and Corso Vittorio Emanuele, taking on a strong symbolic value of rebirth for the city.
